Machine Gun Kelly takes aim at Eminem on his diss track “Rap Devil.” Despite some relevant points, he leaves the door open to being destroyed.
“Fuck ‘Rap God’, I’m the ‘Rap Devil’.” Yep, that what Cleveland, Ohio rapper Machine Gun Kelly declares on his Eminem diss track, “Rap Devil.” Basically, Eminem dissed MGK on his controversial new album Kamikaze, and he was brave (or foolish enough) to respond to the diss. While everyone and his brother knows that there is only one Eminem, Kelly deserves credit for attempting to bite back. One thing that definitely works on “Rap Devil” is the excellent, hard-nosed, minor-key production. It’s definitely fuel for the fire, even if, perhaps, it’s just not enough.
“I’m sick of them sweatsuits and them corny hats, let’s talk about it
I’m sick of you bein’ rich and you still mad, let’s talk about it
Both of us single dads from the Midwest, we can talk about it
Or we could get gully, I’ll size up your body
And put some white chalk around it.”
Expectedly, Machine Gun Kelly makes a number of memorable jabs at the veteran rapper. On the first verse, he insults his age, and calls out his pettiness. To his credit, he has a point here.
“Mad about somethin’ I said in 2012
Took you six years and a surprise album just to come up with a diss…”
On the second verse, Kelly seems definitely pissed, referencing one of Eminem’s most famous records, “Stan.” He asserts, “Tryin’ to be the old you so bad you ‘Stan’ yourself.” He goes on to point the finger at Eminem for being desperate, stating, “The big bad bully of the rap game can’t take a fuckin’ joke.” Once more, he also makes fun of his age:
“Somebody help your mans up (help)
Knees weak of old age, the real Slim Shady can’t stand up!”
Of course, there’s more. On the third verse, Machine Gun Kelly claims that Eminem is in love with him. Why? “Dropped an album just because of me / Damn, you in love with me!” Oddly, he compliments the rapper, or at least states facts (“Still bitter after everyone loves you”), before telling him “Pull that wedgie out your Dungarees.” The fourth and final verse is colorful as well, including more compliments – “You got an Oscar, damn / Can anyone else get some food in their mouth?” Then, getting pretty petty himself, MGK references the rapper’s average height, compared to his own towering figure:
“How could I even look up to you? You ain’t as tall as me
5’8” and I’m 6’4”, seven punches hold your head still
Last time you saw 8 Mile was at home on a treadmill.”
He also brings G-Eazy, Halsey, and Eminem’s ex-, Kim, into the picture:
“Already fucked one rapper’s girl this week / Don’t make me call Kim.”
Final Thoughts
Again, give Machine Gun some credit – he makes a relevant point here and there. Eminem is being petty, but, why respond against one of the greatest rappers of all time? Also, why be so complimentary during the diss? Isn’t that contradictory? While The diss has its moments, it naturally left plenty of ammunition for Eminem to kick his ass. See “KILLSHOT.”
