With third single “My Favorite Part,” Mac Miller continues to foreshadow a radical departure on fourth studio album, The Divine Feminine.
Ahead of his fourth studio album, The Divine Feminine, rapper Mac Miller drops one final single, “My Favorite Part.” Like previous singles from his forthcoming album, “My Favorite Part” is collaborative, featuring girlfriend Ariana Grande. Also like previous singles, “My Favorite Part” is kinder, gentler Mac Miller.
“My Favorite Part” initiates with a hard, opening beat that is soulfully derived by all means. The beat anchors soulful production, which is comprised of a robust bass line and is generally lush. Mac Miller pop-raps/quasi-sings the hook. It’s not pitch-perfect, but quite appealing.
“Said, you just don’t know how beautiful you are And baby that’s my favorite part You walk around so clueless to it all Like nobody gonna break your heart It’ll be alright babe, see, me, I Got you covered I’m gon’ be your lover, you might be the one If it’s only tonight, ayy, we don’t need to worry We ain’t in a hurry, rushin’ into love.”
Mac Miller’s first verse is in a similar vein, embracing pop-rap. Interestingly, his softer tone is also perceptible lyrically:
“It’s been a while since I’ve been sober, this life can be so hard I’d rather talk about you.”
Grande also gets her chance to shine, particularly on the bridge:
“If you wanna stay, we’re taking it slow baby Cause you and me, and I got enough on my mind But I can make time for something so divine.”
Final Thoughts
Three singles in, it’s clear that The Divine Feminine is going to be quite a different album from Mac Miller. “My Favorite Part” is another interesting departure – groovy, soulful, and chocked full of romance. The question is, will Miller fans be okay with the departure? Ultimately, it’s not a bad look, but different.
