“I’m here in spite of it all, I never play along.” Mac Miller has returned for the first time since 2016, when he released his good, if uncharacteristic LP, The Divine Feminine.  It should be noted that the now 26-year old was dating Ariana Grande back then, and that particular relationship is no more.  But this isn’t about who is dating who – let’s keep it about Mac and the music. Often, when an artist reenters the building, the listener is only treated to one single.  Miller goes bigger, dropping three singles: “Programs”, “Buttons,” and “Small Worlds.”  Here, we examine “Buttons.”

“Buttons” features a soulful, throwback backdrop, that exemplifies the soul of Pittsburgh, as well as the East Coast rap sound.  Naturally, the standout production work is perfect fuel for Mac Miller’s fire. Miller begins by singing the hook at the jump, in chill, yet confident fashion.

“Yeah, there’s no answer and you call twice
Nobody be at my house
I was at the studio all night
Last night I slept on the couch
I might, wake up, do it all again
There’s a world going crazy outside
But let’s pretend that it’s alright
We keep pretending that it’s alright.”

Beginning with the first verse, he opts for the un-pitched – straight bars.  The results are solid, as Miller shows off his agility and ability to pack a punch. “This is not a wakeup call,” he asserts, continuing, “I am the hotel operator, I don’t owe nobody favors.”  The second verse is more of the same, as Miller rises above the scrutiny: “Medusa never turned me to a statue, no.”

Final Thoughts

Mac Miller is back strong overall. “Buttons” may get a slight edge over “Programs” – very slight.  He doesn’t reinvent the wheel or himself for that matter, but he’s clearly ‘on.’
