LX Mason, I Don't [Photo Credit: LX Mason]LX Mason dazzles on his debut single, “I Don’t,” a song that eschews being “oppressed by other’s opinions” or by “personal anxieties and fears.”

Does the name LX Mason ring a bell? Perhaps not yet, but be on the lookout for the rising electro/pop artist born and raised in Florida, and currently based in Sydney, Australia. Stylistically Mason can be described as “a singer-songwriter bending the rules of dance pop with soulful melodies, filthy electronic grooves, and lyrics you want to scream out your car window.” How freaking awesome does that all sound? Single “I Don’t” marks a grand occasion for the up-and-comer – his official debut single.  Don’t get it twisted though. “I Don’t,” which was produced and co-written by St. Humain, marks the beginning of his recording career, but this must-hear singer/songwriter has been building a faithful fan base for years.  Now, he takes on the Herculean task of breaking through to the mainstream. One thing’s for sure – he proves he has the skill to do so on “I Don’t.”

There’s plenty for the listener to ‘sink their teeth into’ with “I Don’t.” First and foremost, LX Mason delivers clear, smooth, and impressive vocals.  He never forces things, remaining ‘cool, calm, and collected,’ yet also exhibiting soulfulness sans gospel histrionics (he drops some sick runs at the end btw). Further ripening things vocally, is the sensational use of vocal layering.  The layered vocals showcase his flexibility in the different registers of his voice.  The mix of vocals, separated by an octave, is an awesome, highly-effective touch.

The production as a whole is another selling point, idiomatic of the electro, dance/ urban-pop realm.  While there’s plenty of colorful synths and ideas, the cleanliness and tidy nature is notable.  St. Humain is mindful of space and not overcrowding – he deserves a shout-out as well.  That leaves only one other consideration – the songwriting.  Like everything else, it’s ‘on-point.’ The chorus is catchy and straightforward – this isn’t about pleasing you – “I don’t care about what you say, it’s empty praise, cause everything that I give wasn’t meant to please you. I don’t do it for you.” The verses are honest, and get straight to the point, supporting the chorus.  The bridge also feeds off the same sentiment – he’s doing it his way.  Awesome.

Final Thoughts

Of “I Don’t,” LX Mason states, “This song is about choosing to not be oppressed by the weight of people’s opinions, standards, compliments, hatred, or even your own anxieties and fears. There’s more to life than that, and sometimes you have to break free, take a chance on yourself, and do what makes you happy.” Man, oh man,  does he execute this sentiment clearly on “I Don’t.” Folks, I’m telling you – remember this man’s name.  He has plenty to offer as an artist.  “I Don’t” is the just the start of what should be a brilliant and truly illustrious career.
