Gifted independent R&B musician LW drops a meaningful, empowering new single with “Happy.” On “Happy,” he thinks ‘bigger’ as opposed to ‘smaller.’ 

In 2014, R&B singer, songwriter, and producer LW showed off his extraordinary talents on his debut album, Extraordinary Revisited. LW delivered a respectable urban LP that played to his strengths. He does the same on his exuberant new single, “Happy,” which he composes, arranges, and performs.  What’s the concept – the script behind “Happy?” In his own words, LW states:  

“Happy was created for all of the women who have been physically and mentally abused. I wanted to write a song that let them know there are men who know how to appreciate and accept their brilliance!”

Hearing the background behind “Happy” only amplifies is meaning and significance.

From the opening tip, “Happy” exhibits the positive vibes suggested by the aforementioned quote. LW has created a warm, inviting sound.   The production superbly balances the past and the present.  The lush, rich, urban sounds hearken back to glory days of R&B, namely 90s and 00s contemporary R&B and neo-soul.  The groove, however – particularly the tom ‘runs’ – plays to modern sensibilities.   Hence, “Happy” has elements of old-school and new-school.

The messaging of “Happy” clearly embraces the chivalrous tone of the past, a prudent choice by the artist.  LW delivers jubilant, uplifting vocals that successfully fulfill his purpose behind this anthem.  Clearly, he’s more than willing to promote her happiness.

“Hello, excuse me, I see you having problems / Wonder, if I’m, the one to help you solve them / Maybe / Just tell me.”

His investment is respectable by all means, whether he plays the melody straight or incorporates buttery smooth runs.  While “Happy” plays straight in regards to form, the bridge offers a welcome contrast to the verses and the chorus.  Here, he offers a completely different harmonic progression, eliminating predictability.  Regardless, his bread is buttered on the refrain:

“Lady / I only want you to be happy / but you’re looking so sad / girl you’re looking so sad.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, LW has a gem on his hand.  He uses the universal language of music to convey a powerful, transcendent message.  Even more impressive is how LW takes the seemingly common emotion and title, Happy, and successfully distinguishes from numerous other songs bearing similar sentiment.  Essentially, “Happy” is sure to put a smile on anybody’s face who partakes of its joyous, positive vibes.
