Grammy-nominated R&B singer Lucky Daye drops an enjoyable, well-rounded single in “Fade Away,” from the film, The Photograph.
Lucky Daye (David Brown) found himself elevated a notch, after earning a Grammy nomination for his 2019 ‘urban contemporary’ album, Painted. In addition to earning recognition for the album as a whole, Daye found himself recognized for the record’s main attraction, “Roll Some Mo”, which commences the Painted. Worth noting, I used the song “Floods” on the playlist, 11 Colorful Songs That Reference Devastating Disasters. But this isn’t about Painted, “Roll Some Mo,” or “Floods” – it’s about the song “Fade Away,” which appears from the film, The Photograph. It may be a soundtrack cut, but it’s definitely worthwhile.
“Fade Away” features production (Dernst “D’Mile” Emile II) that hearkens back to the past – more soulful times. The vintage nature of the sound palette is quite refreshing, particularly considering that this isn’t the ‘go-to’ R&B sound of the 10s or 20s. Lucky Daye sounds absolutely marvelous, singing with incredible nuance and quite expressively; His voice is awesome. Thematically, he tackles a familiar, incredibly relatable topic, matters of the heart – L-O-V-E.
“Ooh, we keep a foot on the gas, running from the past Wondering why what we get’ll never last She said, ‘No boy, no, I don’t wanna change I take the pain, not to feel the shame’ … Can’t find it but we need it Maybe it’s just peace of mind that we’re tryna find Baby, don’t swallow that just catch a contact Enjoy the ride, don’t let it go.”
Of course, The Photograph encompasses love, so, Daye’s song certainly ‘fits the script’ you might say.
Final Thoughts
All in all, “Fade Away” is a well-rounded record from Lucky Daye – solid R&B. It checks off the expected boxes. It’s well produced (Emile II), well-written (team of writers, including Daye), and well performed. No, it won’t turn your world upside down or anything like that, but this is a welcome addition to any R&B playlist.
