“All I wanted / Was a little emotion / Keep rolling your eyes / Your world stuck inside / Behind your teeth / Your feelings can’t hide.” Ladies and gents, get prepared for the next alternative pop sensation! Lovelytheband is comprised of Mitchy Collins (lead vocals), Jordan Greenwald (guitar), and Sam Price (drums). Early on in their career, they’ve earned plenty of praise from the likes of BuzzFeed and Billboard. Things get ‘really real’ as the band releases their debut album, finding it hard to smile on August 3, 2018, including their biggest hit to date, “broken”.  We examine the advance single at hand, “emotion.”

From the start, “emotion” showcases the eclectic, ‘alternative’ nature of lovelytheband.  The sound blends 80s cues, pop, and soft rock seamlessly. For listeners looking for a band with some similarities, think The 1975, who also incorporate similar sound cues and ideas musically (not to say these two bands are one and the same). Greenwald’s guitars gloriously pop out of the production, while Price’s drumming is equally top-notch, keeping the “emotion” driving to the nth degree. Frontman Mitchy Collins’ vocals are easy going and laid back yet commanding and firmly in control at the same time.

Final Thoughts

“It used to be magic / Now there’s bullshit and sadness.” Thematically, “Emotion” encompasses a now defunct relationship, plain and simple. Collins illustrates the things that went wrong throughout “emotion,” as well as what would potentially go wrong if they “catch up for coffee.” Ultimately, as the opening lyrical excerpt from the chorus suggests, all Collins desired “was a little emotion” from her.  Look at it this way thought Mitchy – there are NO problems regarding the ‘emotion’ or reaction that this well-produced, well-written, and enjoyable record should get from fans.  Totally good stuff.
