Ah, bring on Midnight Heat 🕛 🔥! Wait – it is not usually hot at midnight! Well, it is steaming hot 🥵 at midnight when it comes to this naughty, innuendo and sex-laden column featuring songs intended for nighttime. Yeah, we are talking about that after dark type $hi†, ya dig? These risqué, unapologetic records often raise eyebrows and temperature alike. In the 102nd edition of Midnight Heat (2023), we explore the naughty, sexy vibes behind, “After the Load is Blown” by Louis Cole.
“You see, a dream, through the boulders / But then… / You blew your load, it’s over.” Wow, Louis Cole. And yes, the talented musician penned and sang about exactly what you though he did – ejaculation. The pleasure occurs on Cole’s 2018 song, “After the Load is Blown”, which appears on his album released the same year, Time. Of course, it is important to provide some context to the climax and the letdown that ensures. The first verse successfully captures the buildup 😈, if you will: “Built up / True love? / You believe it.” Arguably, this lines speaks to the fact that Cole, and many of us, conflate our desires and love.
Of course, after reaching the peak of the mountain, “You blew your load, it’s over (yeah, yeah) / That love was just a loaner (yeah, yeah) / Now real life’s taking over (yeah, yeah, yeah ) / And you don’t know what the hell you’re doing there.” Word. Essentially, after those “seconds of pleasure” – a temporary experience – you come back down. And sometimes, the comedown is a reflective experience, as Cole depicts. In the second verse, he sings, “‘Baby, it’s amazing, the talk got smaller’ / Shrinking, thinking, real thoughts again.” Don’t get it twisted. Louis Cole delivers a sex song that you should still be cautious about playing at work – blowing one’s load isn’t, um, family friendly. But, he also brings ample food for thought, not to mention sophisticated musicianship compositionally, instrumentally, and vocally. The good news about “After the Load is Blown” – there is no letdown, let alone, flaccidity 🤭!
