It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy 💯! On 1 Hit WONDERful, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician.  It is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, that ONE hit earned them recognition. So, in the 42nd edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2025), we dive into “Heaven”, the one-hit wonder by Los Lonely Boys.

“¡Vámonos!”
Indeed! And so, begins “Heaven”, the once-in-a-lifetime pop/rock classic by Los Lonely Boys: Henry Garza, Jojo Garza, and Ringo Garza. “Heaven” is the second track from the brothers’ 2004 self-titled album. A successful, ubiquitous song, “Heaven” peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.  This marked Los Lonely Boys’ only pop hit or entry on the pop charts. The single was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. Its success helped Los Lonely Boys eventually peak at number 9 on the Billboard 200 and earn double platinum certification.  One more huge accolade for “Heaven”: it won a Grammy (Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal).

Beyond the accolades, Los Lonely Boys recorded a song filled with sheer excellence. The instrumental slaps, with gorgeous, ripe guitar and sweet soloing (Henry Garza), soulful organ, a big bass line (Jojo Garza), and an anchoring groove from the drums (Ringo Garza).  Beyond the instrumental, Henry shines with his commanding, sincere lead vocals.  He masterfully brings the spiritual, reflective, and thoughtful songwriting to life.  “Save me from this prison / Lord, help me to get away,” he petitions, and adds, “‘Cause only you can save me now / From this misery.” The lyrics were inspired by the loss of the singer’s 18-month-old son, hence why he mentions heaven and mortality.  “And I know that I need to change my ways of livin’,” he adds, “(How far is  Heaven?) / Lord, can you tell me?” The melodies he sings are tuneful. Beyond his lead, he gets sensational support from backing vocals by Jojo, creating some sweet harmonies.  The centerpiece is the chorus:

“(How far is Heaven?) Yeah, Lord, can you tell me?

(How far is Heaven?) ‘Cause I just gotta know how far, yeah

(How far is Heaven?) Yeah, Lord, can you tell me?”

Notably, there is also a bridge, performed in Spanish: “Tú que estás en alto Cielo / Échame tu bendición” (“You who are in high Heaven / Bestow your blessing upon me”).  “Heaven” is among the most memorable songs from the 2010s. While Los Lonely Boys couldn’t strike gold again, this song alone was enough to solidify their musical legacy.
