Lord Huron gets a boost thanks to “The Night We Met” from sophomore album, Strange Trails.  The single appears on the Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why.

Indie-rock band Lord Huron isn’t exactly a household name.  Suddenly, a little-known band is experiencing an elevation in profile.  Why? 13 Reasons Why is the reason why.  A delightful song, “The Night We Met,” was featured in the first season of the Netflix original series.

“The Night We Met” isn’t brand new by any means.  It appears at the end of the band’s sophomore album, Strange Trails.  Strange Trails was released April 6, 2015.  In other words, “The Night We Met” is a two-year-old song.  Interestingly, it appears on the May 6, 2017 edition of the Billboard Hot 100, bowing at no. 99.  Clearly, Lord Huron is on the rise.

What makes “The Night We Met” so great? In the context of 13 Reasons Why, the lyrics seem to perfectly capture the relationship between Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) and Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford).  Ultimately, the relationship fell through – actually, it never quite was.  Ultimately, Hannah ends up committing suicide, precipitated by the events captured in the series, based upon the novel by Jay Asher.

The chorus from “The Night We Met” speaks on a ghost perfectly fits the series. Clay is clearly haunted by Hannah’s ghost, further precipitated by listening to the tapes she records explaining the reason for her suicide.

“I had all and then most of you / Some and now none of you / Take me back to the night we met / I don’t know what I’m supposed to do / Haunted by the ghost of you / Take me back to the night we met.”

Final Thoughts

There are more parallels to the series, but clearly, Lord Huron did not compose and perform “The Night We Met” for the Netflix original series.  This is a sensational song aside from the buzz its received in the mainstream.  The lyrics are poetic, while the sound and vibe of the record are mysterious.  Considering most were unaware of Lord Huron, hearing just one isolated track from their sophomore album makes listeners want to explore the band more.

Traditional track review? No, but the nontraditional ascent of “The Night We Met” calls for an unorthodox write-up.  Regardless, this is a fantastic song.
