“When we be up in the club, we be posting the back / When we be in the club, girl always come to the back / And we ‘bout to get our head sprung…” Woo! By the time “Headsprung” arrived, Grammy-winning rapper LL Cool J (1968 – ) had long established himself.  He’d already won two Grammys and charted seven of his eight top ten hits. But “Headsprung,” the opener from his 2004, Grammy-nominated, gold-certified album, The DEFinition, added to the rapper/actor’s impressive catalog. Giving the banger some oomph is Timbaland, one of the most creative and innovative producers in the game.  The beat slaps. The synths pop. The overall sound is ear-catching and sleek to the nth degree. The music itself helped make “Headsprung” a pop hit. Specifically, it peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2005, the song was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Besides crafting the sickening, utterly sublime production, Timbaland performs the standout section, the chorus (excerpted above). That is some heavy lifting, Timbo! No worries as LL Cool J does his thing, making “Headsprung” an unforgettable banger from the ‘00s.  From his first lines, ‘Big Elly’ is on autopilot: “They call me Big Elly, a bit silly / Big money, big really / When I’m sliding in the Martin ya hear me / I be slicing with these bars so ya fear me.” Word.  His second verse commences memorably too: “Lord, have mercy! If the broad is thirsty / I’ll have her man reimburse me / The part that hurts me, is when they try to work me / But I could never let ya jerk me.” One other signature moment for LL is the bridge, where he addresses the ladies and the fellas.  “Hey ladies! (Yeah!) No need to get your hair done.” Why? “I’ma get your head sprung,” of course! “I said yo fellas (Yo!) no need to throw them ones.” Why? Again, “I’ma get your head sprung.”  Sure, LL Cool J has more classic songs, but “Headsprung” still ranks among his best.
