Grammy winner Lizzo drops an enjoyable, summery, and unapologetic rap mixtape with MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING.
First and foremost, it has been a while, but here it is. My first album review in more than a year. Do I still have it in me to provide commentary about an entire project as opposed to individual tracks? The answer is a resounding yes! The source of my album reviewing comeback is a mixtape. At the end of June, Grammy-winning rapper/singer/songwriter/flautist Lizzo (Melissa Jefferson) dropped a surprise mixtape, MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING. Although Jefferson had been prepping her third studio album, releasing singles âLove in Real Lifeâ and âStill Badâ, she dipped into rapping exclusively on the tape at hand. Expectedly, the thirty-five-minute rap tape is brasher, more profane, and more unapologetic than her pop music. Recorded in only three days, MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING features some highlights⊠There are bops and bangers to be found this Lizzo summer. Is it the second coming?

âCRASHOUTâ
âWhen I get up out this motherfuckinâ shit Iâm goinâ through right now, bitch / Iâm not lettinâ no ho breathe around me, I promise you, bitchâŠâ And so, begins the crash-out that is âCRASHOUT.â Lizzo sets the bad bitching, carefree, yet unapologetic tone of MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING.  It starts with the profane intro (excerpted above) and continues into the first verse and beyond.  At the end of the first verse, she asserts, confidently, âShe doinâ interviews about me, I donât even know her / While all these bitches sittinâ mad, Iâm out here bending over.â Ooh-wee! In the chorus, she memorably informs us, âWe outside, ho!â âCRASHOUTâ lacks profundity, unless you consider lyrics like, âI need my ass ate, thatâs why I got my ass out,â but Lizzo brings ample attitude, energy, and curse words. Ricky Reed (Eric Frederic), Mike Hector, and Whosantoine produced it.

âYITTY ON YO TITTYS (FREESTYLE)â
With a song title wild enough to prompt interest, âYITTY ON YO TITTYS (FREESTYLE)â finds Lizzo talking her shit. With a sweet, minor-key trap backdrop produced by prxdbyjai, One Play Mike, and Zaytoven, âLizzyâ goes in. Worth noting, âYITTYâ samples âWHIM WHAMIEEâ by PLUTO and YKNIECE. âBitch, itâs Lizzo, call me Lizzy / I been fat and I been skinny, bitches still ainât fuckinâ with me,â she bites in the chorus, adding, âBitch, itâs summer, we outside, put some Yitty on your titties (we outside, ho).â In case you were confused about the swimwear sheâs promoting, it is called YITTY. Â She mentions her weight throughout, including the recurring lyric from the chorus, as well as the likes of, âNigga wanna smash real bad, this nigga burnt out (He burnt out) / Never fucked a big bitch before, I got him turnt out.â Ooh, wee! Like âCRASHOUTâ that precedes, âYITTY ON YO TITTYS (FREESTYLE)â is enjoyable without being game changing or transcendent.

âJUST 4 FUNâ
One of the best songs from MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING is âJUST 4 FUN.â Zaytoven is behind the boards, working his magic with a relaxed, southern rap backdrop that Gucci Mane would eat up. Lizzo drops the best chorus yet from the mixtape, memorably singing, âTook your bitch just for fun / Ass so thick from the front / This my shit, turn it up / Iâm that bitch, da-da-da.â Lizzo also brings the heat in the verses with some sharp lines. Â The first verse commences with a bang: âMe and your bitch playinâ pitty-pat (Pitty-pat) / She got a fat ass, nigga, gimme that (Gimme that).â Woo! Sheâs even fiercer in the second verse, where she states, âBoy, if you ainât on your job, Iâm gonâ pull up and clock it.â Gah-day-um!

âGOTCHO BITCHâ
âHe canât come around unless he send a dick pic / Thatâs that BTS, Iâm talkinâ big hits.â Damn, Lizzy! Lizzo continues to kick ass and take names on âGOTCHO BITCH.â Six producers assemble this one: ATL Jacob, Tay Keith, Hendrix Smoke, Jasper Harris, Ricky Reed, and Zack Sekoff.  Why so many? âGOTCHO BITCHâ is a two-part song meaning there is a distinct beat switch and change of pace.  Even though itâs sub-three minutes like most of MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING, itâs jam-packed. It would be interesting to see just how many times Lizzo utters the word bitch⊠itâs a shit-ton. In the chorus, everybody got your bitch, or so she says. Who is everybody? Lizzo, Nicki, SZA, JT, Latto, GloRilla⊠ Wild but chock-full of attitude, energy, and sass, âGOTCHO BITCHâ marks another moment from the tape with plenty of replay value.

âSTILL CANT FUHâ (Ft. Doja Cat)
Ah, the hits keep on coming on the cute MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING. Unfortunately, he wonât be cumming (couldnât resist). âDonât care what Iâm wearing, you still canât fuck / Take me to dinner, you still canât fuck.â Lizzo makes herself clear on âSTILL CANT FUHâ that he will not be fucking her⊠The unapologetic but infectious and unforgettable chorus continues to articulate that there will be no smashing, no matter how hard he tries! She taps fellow Grammy-winner Doja Cat (Amala Zandile Dlamini) for the assist. Lizzo co-wrote âSTILL CANT FUHâ with Doja Cat, Alex Goldblatt, Pop Wansel (Andrew Wansel), Ricky Reed, Jasper Harris, and Theron Thomas. Goldblatt, Harris, and Ricky Reed produced it.
The chorus lays out the lack of fuh-ing, while the post-chorus further cements the canât, wonât, and still canât⊠fuck! After a fiery start with the chorus and post-chorus, Lizzo doesnât back down in the first verse. Keeping the f-bombs flying, she spits, âFuck these niggas and fuck these bitches, like, bye, Iâm wildinâ / Iâm not on Bumble, Iâm not on Raya / Canât get no neck with no back, you ainât Khia / Upsettinâ these bitches like Cookinwitkya.â Mercy! Doja Cat is fiery, too. âSaid, cocaine in his Hanes underwear / Everybody in here know whatâs under there.â The Hanes line stands out, but Doja ends with a non-bang:  âWouldn’t let him hit to stop a missile / âJust the tip,â okay, Iâll cut it off / Beg for pussy, then I cut him off / Ainât none of my clothes cominâ off (And you still wonât).â Brief but fun, âSTILL CANT FUHâ is an explicit way for Lizzo and Doja Cat to say, I donât owe you sex, and you canât make me give it to you. Besides great performances and striking lyrics, the backdrop is sick with gospelized vocal patch, colorful keys and synths, and a knocking, hip-hop beat.

âNEW MISTAKESâ
âNEW MISTAKESâ has a tough act to follow.  Despite the cockblocking, âSTILL CANT FUHâ is the shit. Those new mistakes, however, are drenched in FĂŒr Elise. What does that mean? âNEW MISTAKESâ interpolates the Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 â 1827) banger⊠It is a banger, though thatâs not how one typically describes classic music. Ricky Reed, B Ham, Ryan OG, and Tobias Wincorn produced it. The interpolation is âin your faceâ, crafting the melody of the chorus.
âI just wanna make some new mistakes
Give this a break, throw love away
I thought that this was real, but it was fake
But thatâs okay, you out the way
At least Iâm through fuckinâ with you, but now Iâm cool
And I can go and make some new mistakes
Sha-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.â
Maybe itâs too much FĂŒr Elise. The real issue is that with such a superior, untouchable gem as the Beethoven piece is, âNEW MISTAKESâ comes nowhere close to matching it, let alone exceeding it. Perhaps mistakes, new or old, and Sha-la-la-las just donât go with Beethoven, Lizzy! I will co-sign with Lizzo in one moment: âI got that drink in my system / I got that drink in my system / Iâm grindinâ on somebodyâs son / If he act right, he gonâ get some.â Hell yeah! Grind on, sis! In all fairness, some will love âNEW MISTAKESâ while others may be irked and slightly annoyed.

âBEND IT OVAâÂ
âAm I doinâ too much? Thatâs to be determined / And Iâm gettingâ slim, donât ask me to be the bigger person, ho.â I see what you did there, Lizzo. âBEND IT OVAâ continues to find the artist exuding confidence and delivering risquĂ©, unapologetic bars. Over a T-Minus and Nico Baran-produced backdrop, she focuses on pleasure for the majority of the song, hence why sheâs bending it over.  Of the pleasure, in the chorus, she asserts, âTonight might fuck up my liver (Uh-huh) / That dick make my coochie quiver.â WE LISTEN AND WE DONâT JUDGE! Beyond the lyric touting the quality of the peen, in the second verse, Lizzy informs us, âIâma shoot my shot like I think Iâm KD / Iâm a firework, so I think Iâm Katy / I like when he get mad, he be like, âFuck you,â fuck me (Fuck me).â

âLEFTRIGHTâÂ
The sex and bad bitching ways of MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING continue with âLEFTRIGHTâ. âGo left, go right / Go left, right, left, right / My back is achinâ, my belt too tight / My booty shakinâ from left to right.â Oh, snap, Melissa! Lizzo gives us a booty-shaking banger where she continues to give zero fuhs! Lizzo co-wrote âLEFTRIGHTâ with Pop Wansel and John Morris. Wansel and Ricky Reed produced. From start to finish, sheâs confident. âQueen Lizzy, bow down / Fuck âround and found out,â she spits in the first verse. Regarding sexual matters, Lizzy asserts, âIf he a Gemini âïž, I might take him to pound town.â More striking than pound town is what she feels: âI can feel it through his denim, thatâs a hard launch.â Damn! In the second verse, our self-described baddie continues her badass ways. Sheâs outside with her gay sons and thot daughters, after all! Sheâs bad because, âBitch, Iâm from Texas.â This badness â horniness and freakiness â finds her rapping, âTake me back to coochie cutters at the Freaknik / I can throw some ass and make a nigga sea sick / I can feel I through the boxers, baby, itâs big.â Holy shit, I mean, holy dick! In the outro, she hella bad: âIâma work them cheeks, left, right / Goddamn, daddy, left, right / Up, down, up, down, left right / You would be mad if I left, right?â Ooh-wee! Over a minimalist but potent backdrop, Lizzo puts in some serious work on âLEFTRIGHTâ.

âDROPPIN ON ITâ
âBig girl knees and they givinâ like Megan / Pussy been poppinâ, somethinâ you could put your faith in.â Aww, shiiittt! Lizzo continues to have carefree fun on âDROPPIN ON IT.â On this Ricky Reed-produced cut, Lizzo dips into bounce music, which is a pro. An unserious joint, sheâs focused on fun more than substance. âBad bitches know they like to hop on the wood,â she spits in the chorus, continuing, âThick bitches know they wanna hop on the wood.â Sex positivity, itâs all the rage!
~ Table of Contents ~ // ~ intro ~
âSUMMA SHITâ
Beyond droppinâ on it, Lizzo is on her âSUMMA SHIT.â Thereâs not much to it, evidenced by the chorus which affirms this summer shit. Essentially, this track is a vibe. Lite on substance, but summery, as the title suggests.  Size matters but not like on âLEFTRIGHTâ: âWhole lot of big, oh, fuck / Who lot of big bitches, shit / Whole lot of big bitches in a two-piece / Big like when I be flyinâ out by two seats.â Lizzo has lost a significant amount of weight, but, for some larger people (speaking from experience), body dysmorphia, still feeling big, etc., are part of the experience. I have questions about the âTwo thongs in my ass, where the pool at?â line, though⊠The soulful backdrop is a selling point, particularly how beautiful those keys sound against that trap beat. Oh, and once more, she mentions that YITTY.

âIRLâ (Ft. SZA)
Uh-oh! Superstar collaboration! Lizzo enlists fellow Grammy winner SZA for the assist on âIRL.â Lizzo draws first blood, setting the tone. She maintains her rap-driven persona, which fits seamlessly over a sleek, mean-sounding backdrop. Unsurprisingly, sheâs a what? A bad bitch, bi-otch! In the chorus, she tells us, âCanât be no fake bitch / If itâs real, keep it real, we the only ones / Just make it shake, bitch / I donât care what you wear if we havinâ fun.â SZA brings a kinder, gentler quality singing in the second verse. Sheâs still fierce, even with her cooler and smoother approach (âDiamonds dancinâ, chain is bouncinâ, dick inside me, I need that / Titties up, I need attention, favorite eater, call me backâ). All in all, âIRLâ is a vibe, though, surprisingly, NOT the crowning achievement of MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING.

âCUT EM OFFâ
âOoh, oh my god, weird bitches / Iâm scared đ±, spooky đ», hahaha.â Woo! Zaytoven is back behind the boards on the eccentric âCUT EM OFF,â the penultimate cut from SMILING. He gives Lizzo an eerie but radiant instrumental to rap over. Once again, she drops her favorite curse word, a lot: bitch. At this point, Iâve lost count of how many times sheâs mentioned bitches but, itâs a helluva lot.  It doesnât take a rocket scientist to know what she is urging us to do to them: âIf youâre lookinâ for a sign, cut them bitches off.â Itâs not bad advice, by any means. By the end, sheâs uttered the phrase so many times it makes the listener want to go and cut them bitches off. Truthfully, Lizzo probably does have âa lot of frenemies,â as she raps in the verse. One thingâs for sure, though⊠âA real bitchâll put it in the music, jeez.â That, she did. Now, cut them bitches, off!
~ Table of Contents ~ // ~ intro ~
âDITTOâÂ
âFirst of all, we ain’t gonâ stop like all these niggas ainât tryna fuck on big girls / Then accuse me of fat shaminâ? Goddamn, it’s a sick world.â Woo! âDITTOâ concludes MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING. Following the intro, Lizzo gives us a verse (excerpted above), a chorus, and an outro. Â The chorus is one of the better ones from the tape.
âIt is what it is, but it ainât what it ainât, though
They swear that they friends âtil you take âem off the payroll
In love with my fans and my bands and my pillow
My man call me baby, but the world call me.â
In the outro, where she spells her name, she thanks the listeners. Being the bigger person, âAnd to the bitches who donât love me back, I still love you, bitch.â Word. Besides confirming âItâs a Lizzo summer, bitch,â the most interesting revelation from the âDITTOâ outro is âI did this shit in three motherfuckinâ days, bitch.â The recording process for MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING was not drawn out. Powers Pleasant, Thank You Fizzle, Frankie Bash, and Car!ton produced the closer, which samples the 2003 H-Town gem, âStill Tippinââ by Mike Jones featuring Slim Thug and Paul Wall (âBack then, they didnât want me, now Iâm hot, they all on meâ).

The Verdict đšđŸââïž
So, how does MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING stack up? Itâs a cute and fun mixtape. It is impressive that it was recorded in three days. There is nothing transcendent or game-changing about this project, but as a lite rap project released in summer, it works.  There are some surefire bangers here. A few songs are less memorable, but there is nothing egregious to be found. Does Lizzo say bitch way too much? Yes, but, this is the same person who informed us on Special, âI Love You Bitchâ, so, it is what it is! Is it a Lizzo summer? Yes, it is!
