Lizzo, "Good as Hell (Remix)" (Ft. Ariana Grande) [Photo Credit: Atlantic]“Good as Hell” by pop standout Lizzo was already ‘good as hell’ without a remix, but Ariana Grande provides a welcome contrast on the infectious hit.

“So, girl, if he don’t love you anymore / Then walk your fine ass out the door.” Attitude! Lizzo has had a tremendous year in 2019, become an unlikely pop star.  To her credit, she’s a blend of hip-hop, pop, and R&B, but that’s sort of the blueprint these days.  Her biggest claim to fame is her number one hit, “Truth Hurts,” which appears on the deluxe edition of her fine, 2019 album, Cuz I Love You.  That said, she’s also been getting buzz from a song from a previous EP, “Good as Hell.” “Good as Hell” originally appeared on Lizzo’s 2016 EP, Coconut Oil.  Much like “Truth Hurts” (a two-year old song), “Good as Hell” is a hot commodity, made hotter via a remix featuring Ariana Grande.

The deal is, the original “Good as Hell” is indeed, good as hell.  The vocals from Lizzo are on-point, filled with energy.  The personality she infuses into her performance, coupled with brilliant production work by Ricky Reed makes this a totally infectious, can’t-miss, sub-three-minute gem.  But, adding Ariana Grande, particularly with a degree of control and subtlety, works out well.  Lizzo remains the star, but Grande provides a nice contrast, as she sneaks in on the second half of the second verse.  From there on, the two trade lines or sing together with remarkable results.  By the final chorus, the duet is quite ripe, giving listeners some epic ear candy – or something like that.  Even if you’re a dude, who can resist:

“And do your hair toss, check my nails
Baby, how you feelin’ (Feelin’ good as hell).”

Final Thoughts

“Good as Hell” is just that – good as hell“Good as Hell (Remix)”, featuring Ariana Grande, is also good as hell.  Does the remix trump the original? No, but what stands out about this particular remix is that the producer/remixer/guest artist don’t try to overdo or totally recreate a song that doesn’t need recreation.  That’s a win.
