Concerned with fitness, specifically ensuring that her “booty vicious,” Minneapolis-based hip-hop musician Lizzo drops short, but sweet single, “Fitness.”
“Independent, athletic
I been sweating, doing calisthenics
Booty vicious, mind yo business
I been working, working on my fitness.”
Minimal production – specifically a repetitive, sketchy-sounding synth – accompanies Lizzo as she sings a fitness-oriented hook. Who is Lizzo? She’s an alternative hip-hop artist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The first artist that comes to mind when mentioning Minnesota? Prince. But focusing on the artist at hand, she kicks off single “Fitness” with a healthy mindset. Question is, does it last?
After a synth fuels her fire, the production becomes slightly more developed, but nothing too ornate. What does become more pronounced is the attitude of Lizzo. To say the least, she’s feisty, fierce, and definitely fit. While promoting health is notable, she definitely seems to put emphasis on a healthy sex life, if you catch the drift.
“I’ve been lifting heavy metal
See this ass? Ain’t no rental
Take it down low like stretching
Pick it back up like I’m flexing
Woo, tryna get it, working on my fitness.”
Final Thoughts
Lizzo keeps it short and sweat on “Fitness.” Her endeavors, in regards to fitness, as well as sexual innuendo, are clever. She deserves some credit for a key lyric that makes you interpret the song a bit different: “But I don’t do this for you.” No wheels are reinvented and hip-hop hasn’t been turned upside down, but she definitely shows mad potential. #Fitness Baby
