Lizzo, Cuz I Love You [Photo Credits: Nice Life / Atlantic]Rising rapper, singer, and songwriter Lizzo ‘kills it’ on “Cuz I Love You,” an advance single and title track from her major label debut, Cuz I Love You.

“I’m cryin’, ‘cause I love you.” Simple lyrics, but ‘man, oh man’ does rising rapper, singer, and songwriter Lizzo pack a mighty punch.  The feisty musician isn’t a twenty-something breaking into the game but is actually in her 31st year.  Her age is beside the point as Lizzo is one of the more intriguing musicians to break through the music industry in recent times.  All of her singles leading up to her major label debut album Cuz I Love You have been terrific. Title track “Cuz I Love You” is easily the most soulful.

“Never been in love before / What the fuck and fucking feelings, you? / Once upon a time, I was a ho / I don’t even wanna ho no mo’.” Da-yum! “Cuz I Love You” perfectly suits Lizzo, period.  The production, handled by alternative rock collective X Ambassadors, is robust, chocked-full of soul.  This neo-/retro-soul tinged backdrop is perfect because it allows Lizzo to be dramatic and over-the-top with her emotions. Furthermore, vocally, she has the ‘fuel for the fire’ to totally ‘let ‘er rip’ – totally ‘kick ass and take names.’  The premise is that she’s put aside her old ways, has found a man she’s truly in love with, and it’s made her crazy, excited, and all the range of feelings attached to L-O-V-E.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Lizzo has a gem on her hands with “Cuz I Love You.”  She shows of mad soulful chops, while also sounding incredibly relevant in 2019.  A pairing with X Ambassadors seems totally unlikely on paper, yet listening to the results, it’s absolutely awesome to the nth degree.  The rapper, singer, songwriter definitely checks off all boxes on “Cuz I Love You,” further building anticipation for her major-label debut.
