he’s back! Who, you ask? Why, 🏆 Grammy-winning pop sensation 🎙 Lizzo, and guess what? What? It’s 🎵 “About Damn Time”! Okay, okay, I’m being silly, but, after receiving mixed reviews for 🎵 “Rumors” in August 2021, we hadn’t heard any new tunes.  Now, Lizzo’s back with this promo from her sophomore album, 💿 Special, which arrives July 15, 2022.  From my perspective, Lizzo is more effective on “About Damn Time.” That said, some folks will continue to have ample criticism.

What makes “About Damn Time” a winner in my eyes? Well there’s kick ass production (🎛 Blake Slatkin and 🎛 Ricky Reed) constructed with rhythm guitar, robust bassline, and a killer groove. The sound of the record has a retro quality – think old-school R&B. This backdrop suits Lizzo, who from the onset, is confident AF. I heart the attitude that she brings to the track, as well as the high-flying vocals.  The chorus is incredibly catchy, led by the titular lyric, “It’s about damn time.” Woo! Also, I like how she switches to rap in the second verse.  This provides a welcome contrast.  Furthermore, the bridge/outro is fun AF (“I’m coming out tonight” with its “oohs”).

Final Thoughts 💭

groovyPersonally, I believe Lizzo ‘comes through’ on 🎵 “About Damn Time”. Admittedly, I overrated 🎵 “Rumors” but I feel like “About Damn Time” works better.  Will it be able to match the success of say “Truth Hurts” or “Juice”? Probably not, but I can see this fun, groovy joint getting some radio rotations as well as ample streams.  Regardless, I’m excited to see what Special serves up upon its release.  “About Damn Time” is a good start.
