Little Mix, Woman Like Me [Photo Credits: Syco, Sony Music Entertainment UK]British pop girl group Little Mix enlists the services of rapper Nicki Minaj for their attitude-filled, ‘girl power’ single, “Woman Like Me.”

“I made a few mistakes, I regret it nightly / I broke a couple hearts that I wear on my sleeve / My momma always said, ‘Girl, you’re trouble’ and / And now I wonder, could you fall for a woman like me.” Ah, there’s nothing like ‘girl power’, or so they say.  With that said, pop girl group Lil Mix are back with a new single that questions if these men can “fall for women like them.”  On “Woman Like Me,” the girls seem to have their fair share of issues, but are pressing onward regardless.  Helping them in their endeavors to find men to fall for them is the Queen herself, Nicki Minaj.

“Woman Like Me” begins abruptly with sultry, low-register vocals by Jesy Nelson.  The tone is instantly set, further amplified by the tropical, reggae cues.  Even if the opening vocals are more undertone than overt, its apparent the girls have ‘that attitude’ on “Woman Like Me.”  Soon enough, the vocals pop, ascending to the more powerful, high-flying upper register.  By the pre-chorus (excerpted above), “Woman Like Me” is completely lit – fiery to the nth degree.  The chorus is gimmicky, but effective by all means.

“Woman like me, like a woman like me

La-la-la woman like me, like a woman like me.”

Nicki Minaj only amplifies the energy and intensity on the bridge, solidifying ‘bad bitch’ status, essentially her own words.  “I switch it up for every ear, I’m really bomb,” she spits, “These bitches really wanna be Nicki, I’m really mom.” Safe to say, she’s confident.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Woman Like Me” is an energetic, fun, and memorable single from Lil Mix.  The concept isn’t new, nor is the sound in particular, but, the overall result is appealing.
