Yes, it’s a playlist, but it’s a miniature playlist that shouldn’t take much time to consume. On this the 12th edition of 5ive Songs, 2021, we select five songs that are associated with LIPS 👄 in some form or fashion. Okay, let’s get into it!
1. YUNGBLUD, “Strawberry Lipstick” 💄
💿 weird! • 🏷 Interscope • 🗓 2020
“I’ve got a toxic attitude and lack self-control / A reasonably fucked up individual.” Wow! The brief 🎵 “strawberry lipstick” appears as the third track on 💿 weird!, the 2020 sophomore LP by 🎙 YUNGBLUD (Dominic Harrison). “Strawberry lipstick” definitely grabs your attention the very first time you hear it. “They’re gonna lock me in the closet but I’m coming out,” he later continues on the first verse, adding, “Singing fuck all the oppression and the self-doubt.” Harrison is nonconformist to the nth degree – awesome! His accent is quite prominent throughout and he remains assertive from the jump.
While the first verse isn’t particularly melodic, but he makes up for it by the incredibly catchy chorus (“So take it easy, take it easy, take it easy, girl”). On the second verse, the listener gets a better idea of the melodic identity, as well as the memorable line, “She gonna suck on my strawberry lipstick.” Also, adding to the glory and liberation of this track are the dynamic, ‘in your face’ guitars.

2. Meghan Trainor, “Lips Are Movin”
💿 Title • 🏷 Epic • 📅 2015
“If your lips are movin’, then you’re lyin’, lyin’, lyin’, baby.” 🎵 “Lips Are Movin” was a ubiquitous single from 🏆 Grammy-winner 🎙 Meghan Trainor back in 2015. The record definitely matches the sound and themes of her retro-pop debut album, 💿 Title. Trainor wrote “Lips Are Movin” alongside 🎼✍ Kevin Kadish, who also produces 🎛 the track.
The script of “Lips Are Movin” is quite similar to the LP’s most dominant cut, “All About That Bass”. The big difference? Lips as opposed to booty, essentially.
“I know you’re lyin’ Cause your lips are movin’ Tell me, do you think I’m dumb? I might be young, but I ain’t stupid Talking around in circles with your tongue I gave you bass, you gave me sweet talk Saying how I’m your number one But I know you lie Cause your lips are movin Baby don’t you know I’m done?”

3. Hinder, “Lips of an Angel”
💿 Extreme Behavior • 🏷 Republic • 📅 2005
“Honey why you callin’ me so late?” Those are the famous opening lyrics from the 2005 hit single, 🎵 “Lips of an Angel” by rock collective, 🎙 Hinder. This was the breakthrough song – a rock ballad, mind you – from 💿 Extreme Behavior that ‘put the band on the map.’ Of course, many people ‘hated on’ Hinder back in the day, comparing them to successful if divisive Canadian rock band Nickelback. Nonetheless, “Lips of an Angel” was difficult to escape – it was incredibly ubiquitous.
Of course, the most irresistible part of the song is none other than the centerpiece, the chorus. Besides the lyrics and melody here, maybe it’s the, masculine, dare I say, sexy vocals of front man 🎙 Austin Winkler, sigh.
“It’s really good to hear your voice Sayin’ my name, it sounds so sweet Comin’ from the lips of an angel Hearin’ those words, it makes me weak And I never wanna say goodbye But girl you make it hard to be faithful With the lips of an angel.”
4. Maroon 5, “Lips on You”
💿 Red Pill Blues • 🏷 Interscope • 📅 2017
🏆 Grammy-winning pop collective 🎙 Maroon 5 has changed dramatically over the years, embracing and infusing ‘trendy pop’ into their music. Honestly, doesn’t the band feel like more of an 🎙 Adam Levine solo project? That’s a debate or discussion for another day and a different forum. Regardless, 🎵 “Lips on You” is one of those better records from the band’s 2017 album, 💿 Red Pill Blues. The song was penned Levine, 🎼✍ Jason Evigan, 🎼✍ Julia Michaels, 🎼✍ Charlie Puth, and 🎼✍ Jacob Kasher. Puth also produces 🎛.
“Lips…” oozes with personality and of course, sex – sounds like a surefire winner, right! It’s well-executed overall, and fits Levine perfectly.
“When I put my lips on you You feel the shivers go up and down your spine for me Make you cry for me When I put my lips on you.”

5. The xx, “Lips”
💿 I See You • 🏷 Young Turks • 📅 2017
🎙 Jamie “xx” Smith, 🎙 Romy Madley Croft, and 🎙 Oliver Sim make up quite the alternative trio as 🎙 The xx. 💿 I See You ranked among the best albums of 2017, particularly highlights 🎵 “Say Something Loving” and 🎵 “On Hold”. Croft leads the singing charge on the first verse of the low-key 🎵 “Lips.”
Amazingly, “Lips” packs a punch without breaking a sweat. Sim, predictably, kicks off the second verse, maintaining the poise of his partner-in-crime. “Lips” floats as opposed to being particularly assertive or dynamic, but it’s definitely pleasant.
