Lil Yachty, Peek a Boo © Capitol/MotownLil Yachty falls short on his new single, “Peek a Boo.” Although he is assisted by Migos, “Peek a Boo” still feels lackluster and devoid of originality.

After a while, even some bangers grow old.  Up and coming rapper Lil Yachty continues to build up his career, undoubtedly.  His biggest claim to fame with the mainstream was the Grammy-nominated joint, “Broccoli,” where D.R.A.M. was the lead artist.  Yachty released his debut mixtape, Lil Boat, in 2016, led by unique song, “Minnesota.” Now he returns with a new single, “Peek a Boo,” featuring Migos. Presumably, “Peek a Boo” will appear on his debut studio album.  Perhaps it shouldn’t.

Migos are hot by all means in 2017.  Culture was “kind of a big deal,” remaining a top 10 album for numerous weeks and still commanding the top 20 of the Billboard 200.  Still, not even Migos can save this dud.  The first bad sign for “Peek a Boo” is the hook.  The hook is drenched in repetition, corniness, and tasteless sex.  Lil Yachty takes the opportunity to inform the audience of his sexcapades, like any good rapper does, before turning the lyrics around to assert his strength in the rap game.

“Uh, uh, play with that pussy like peek-a-boo...
Play with that money like peek-a-boo, ooh
Play with these bitches like peek-a-boo, uh
Broke ass bitch n*gga
I’m not finna play with you, that’s what these rappers do.”

The 19-year old’s horniness isn’t far-fetched.  What is troubling is how open he is during the first verse.  The worst of it arrives towards the end:

“My new bitch yellow
She blow that dick like a cello
Fuck her then send that bitch home on the metro.”

Celli aren’t blown into… their stringed instruments.  EPIC FAIL. Migos pick up the slack… On the second verse, Offset focuses mainly on money and violence, but also references sex.  Quavo references the money and violence on verse three.  Last but not least Takeoff focuses on money and material, references Actavis (lean), and of course ladies.  Takeoff certainly has an interesting way of describing his preferences:

“Yellow bitch, Pikachu...
Cameltoe peekin’ at you (look at you)
Peek-a-boo
Peek-a-boo, peek-a-boo.”

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Peek a Boo” just doesn’t quite cut it.  Lil Yachty certainly doesn’t make any bold statements on this record, letting his pants potentially negate a lucrative career.  Migos are experiencing their time right now, but do they offer anything we haven’t already heard? No.  This is forgettable and clumsy AF.
