Lil Xan, TOTAL XANARCHY © ColumbiaWith the announcement of his debut album, ‘TOTAL XANARCHY,’ rising rapper Lil Xan releases the remix of single “Betrayed,” featuring Rich the Kid and Yo Gotti.

On April 6, 2018, the TOTAL XANARCHY occurs. TOTAL XANARCHY, for those out of the loop, is the debut studio album by rising rapper Lil Xan.  Lil Xan is a member of the new-school of rappers whose style is built more on ad-libs and utter shallowness as opposed to being meaningful or transcendent.  Yes, he’s a SoundCloud rapper through and through, something that shows through on the remix of his earlier single, “Betrayed”He gets the assist from Rich the Kid and Yo Gotti.

Staring with the production, it’s mellow and easy-going.  For the three rappers, it serves as a compelling backdrop. Rich the Kid starts things off with a bang:

“Ooh, I pop a Perc’ when I’m upset

She sucked my d**k right on Sunset.”

It’s shallow, but give the rapper credit for the line, “I told them Xans that, ‘I hate you.’” Lil Xan follows up with the chorus, which is chocked-full of Xans.

“Xans don’t make you (you)
Xans gon’ take you
Xans gon’ fake you (yeah)
And Xans gon’ betray you (what? Yeah)
Xans don’t make you (you)
Xans gon’ take you (brrr)
Xans gon’ fake you (yeah)
Xans gon’ betray you (ayy, yeah, ayy).”

He follows up with a verse, which also seems to speak against Xans.  That’s fine, but calling it wholesome per se would be an overstatement (“I wish that b*tch just kiss me”).  Yo Gotti closes out the verses, focused on “gang shit.” Hmm, this record seems to deliver mixed messages.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, fans and followers of Lil Xan will enjoy the “Betrayed (Remix).” Those of us who knew rap prior to the SoundCloud age will continue to be skeptical. This record is okay, but certainly not game changing.  It would be nice to hear Lil Xan exhibit more range as an artist.  Maybe TOTAL XANARCHY will go deeper…Doubtful, but maybe.
