Lil Uzi Vert, Quavo, and Travis Scott deliver “Go Off,” the promo single from The Fate of the Furious, the latest installment of The Fast and the Furious franchise.
First things first. There’s yet another Fast and the Furious movie? Of course, there is. Instead of the film being the Fast and the Furious 1,000,000, it’s entitled The Fate of the Furious. With the return of the sports car movie, a soundtrack, chocked full of hip-hop, accompanies it. Leading the charge for The Fate of the Furious: The Album is “Go Off,” featuring Travis Scott, Quavo, and Lil Uzi Vert.
So, how does “Go Off” stack up? It’s an energetic, well-produced record, but not a game changer. Calling “Go Off” generic would be an understatement, but listening to the featured track, it sounds like a soundtrack cut. Sure, the flex cues are firmly planted, but it’s difficult to envision “Go Off” having the same success as “See You Again,” which transcended the film itself.
Naturally, the hook fits the theme of The Fate of the Furious:
“One more ride, one more race / We go all out, we don’t play / One more ride, one more race / We don’t slow down, ain’t no brakes.”
Following the self-explanatory, ‘says nothing profound’ hook, the rappers get to work. Quavo starts things off, where “riding” is the M.O.
“Ride, switching lanes, you can’t stop me / You can smell the propane when you pass me.”
Travis Scott arrives for the second verse, referencing his Chevy and shifting gears:
“Double O speed, double O Chevy / I hit the fourth gear, hope I don’t drift / Souped up cars all around me / Hot-boxing at a high speed.”
Lil Uzi Vert takes the final verse, rapping about his expensive Nissan and “burning rubber like I’m moving dark.” Sigh.
Final Thoughts
All in all, “Go Off” is what it is. Enjoyable enough, but merely okay in the big scheme of things. Even with an all-star cast, this record only has a limited ceiling. Okay, not extraordinary by any means.
