Up-and-coming rapper Lil Skies drops “Signs of Jealousy,” among singles arriving in advance of his highly-anticipated debut album, ‘Life of a Dark Rose.’
“Signs of Jealousy” serves as a promo single for Life of a Dark Rose, the highly-anticipated debut album for rap newcomer Lil Skies. “Signs of Jealousy” is among four singles issued in advance of the album. Following an intro made up of the obligatory “ay(s)” and “yuh(s),” Skies drops the melodic, pop-rapped hook on us.
“I sip the lean in the car / My shooter rock out like guitars / Take his girl and I’m breaking her heart / Me and Gabe, we be shining like stars / Smoking dope, I don’t f*ck with the bars / I think I landed on Mars / They be hating cause we living large.”
On the hook, his flow is appealing, delivering the rhymes in an agile, spry fashion. Lyrically, it’s not deep, referencing drug-use, violence, and sex, but it’s no different than the script embraced by a number of veteran rappers either. A bridge follows, with Lil Skies asserting, “Why you hating on me? / It is so easy to see / Showing signs of jealousy.” Yada, yada, yada. The first verse encompasses money (“F*ck a hoe, I be stacking my cake”) and sex (“In her room and she giving me face”). On the second verse, the he writes off haters, as well as cooks up some drugs:
“But these n***as pressed on me / And they tryna copy the swag / But they cannot get it from me /In the kitchen with recipes.”
Final Thoughts
So, What’s the verdict on “Signs of Jealousy?” It’s respectable, but not game changing or ‘brand new.’ Am I hatin’, showing “shines of jealousy” with my ‘so what, it’s okay’ reaction to this song? Nah, just “calling it like I see it.”
