Lil Pump, Designer © The Lights GlobalLil Pump continues to ‘ride the success’ of cliché bangers with “Designer.” With a great flow filled with a cocky personality, the rub is the overabundance of shallowness and lack of lyrical substance.

“Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang, Gucci gang”. Yep, Lil Pump and his dumb, utterly repetitive single “Gucci Gang” was ubiquitous in 2017. Honestly, “Gucci Gang,” in all its simplicity, was characteristic of a number of rap artists and singles in 2017.  The teen SoundCloud rapping standout returns with another ‘deep’ single, “Designer.”

After an intro referencing his “Gucci Gang” video (“A teacher gets slapped with a bag of marijuana”), Lil Pump seems to give no fucks whatsoever on the hook.

“I got fast cars, bad bitches and designer clothes / Couple thousand on my wrist and my neck is froze / Spanish bitches butt naked and they twerkin’ on the stove / Too much racks in my pocket that my wallet can’t fold.”

As usual, Lil Pump could care less that he’s living on dangerously – he thrives off it, flexing like a boss.  Excess is his best friend, no matter how shameful it may be. This excess/flex-fest continues on the sole verse.  On this verse, he references his hoes (“Couple of hoes up on a yacht”), drugs (“Whitney,” “lean,” “Xan”), his wrist, and of course, money (“I’m worth a couple millions, bitch, you know I love to flex”).  He closes things with the aforementioned chorus, which is chocked-full of shallowness.  This occurs over a malicious, hard-hitting, trap beat.

Final Thoughts

The good news is that Lil Pump has an appealing, energetic flow.  Additionally, his arrogance and [over] confidence translates successfully on the record.  The bad news is, how many more generic bangers that are ultimately about the same thing and nothing at the same time can he record? Yes, the flow is good for a couple of bangers but they can only cover up this young rapper’s lack of range – lack of substance beyond the drugs he so frequently references – for so long.
