Lil Nas X, "Sun Goes Down" [📷 : Columbia]Lil Nas X gets personal on “Sun Goes Down,” his second single of 2021 and the third single from his forthcoming debut album.

Controversy sells, but it can also create plenty of backlash.  For 🏆  Grammy winner 🎙  Lil Nas X, he returned with a bang with 🎵  “MONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)”, easily the one of the most controversial and polarizing songs of 2021.  Though “MONTERO” debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, it definitely ruffled feathers – well – the music video and that Satanic lap dance…  Regardless, Nas X is back – not sure if unscathed or not – with a personal and sweet new single, 🎵 “Sun Goes Down”. “Sun Goes Down” is set to appear on X’s forthcoming debut album, 💿  MONTERO.

“I wanna run away
Don’t wanna lie, I don’t want a life
Send me a gun and I'll see the sun
I’d rather run away
Don’t wanna lie, I don’t want a life
Send me a gun and I'll see the sun.”

Wow, those lyrics are definitely troubling, capturing the suicidal thoughts of a younger Lil Nas X, apparently.  Beyond the chorus, he goes on to expound about his younger life, coping with bullying, colorism, and homosexuality.  While there’s ample sadness as to be expected, Nas X arrives at a happier place later, asserting, “And I’m happy by the way / That I made that jump, that leap of faith / I’m happy that it all worked out for me…”

A few more notes. As to be expected, the production is a big selling point on “Sun Goes Down.” A team comprised of 🎛 Take A Daytrip, 🎛 Omer Fedi, and 🎛 Roy Lenzo do a marvelous job, with some of the best features being the warm sound, created by guitars and later, strings.  This is perfect fuel for Lil Nas X, who also has a well written, tuneful melody to work with. Nas X gives fine vocal performance, showing off his lower register.  The effect is a masculine sound that is definitely sweet music to the ears.

Final Thoughts 💭

Will Lil Nas X remain ‘cancelled’ for some? Probably.  For those who don’t approve of his openness regarding his sexuality, as well as the things he’s overcame, they still won’t tune in for “Sun Goes Down.” That said, those who love Nas X and acknowledge the artistry that he brings to the tale will eat this single up and are definitely ready for the release of MONTERO. I’m onboard.
