Lil Nas X, "Sun Goes Down" [๐Ÿ“ท : Columbia]Lil Nas X gets personal on โ€œSun Goes Down,โ€ his second single of 2021 and the third single from his forthcoming debut album.

Controversy sells, but it can also create plenty of backlash.  For ๐Ÿ†  Grammy winner ๐ŸŽ™  Lil Nas X, he returned with a bang with ๐ŸŽต  โ€œMONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)โ€, easily the one of the most controversial and polarizing songs of 2021.  Though โ€œMONTEROโ€ debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, it definitely ruffled feathers โ€“ well โ€“ the music video and that Satanic lap danceโ€ฆ  Regardless, Nas X is back โ€“ not sure if unscathed or not โ€“ with a personal and sweet new single, ๐ŸŽต โ€œSun Goes Downโ€. โ€œSun Goes Downโ€ is set to appear on Xโ€™s forthcoming debut album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ  MONTERO.

โ€œI wanna run away
Donโ€™t wanna lie, I donโ€™t want a life
Send me a gun and I'll see the sun
Iโ€™d rather run away
Donโ€™t wanna lie, I donโ€™t want a life
Send me a gun and I'll see the sun.โ€

Wow, those lyrics are definitely troubling, capturing the suicidal thoughts of a younger Lil Nas X, apparently.  Beyond the chorus, he goes on to expound about his younger life, coping with bullying, colorism, and homosexuality.  While thereโ€™s ample sadness as to be expected, Nas X arrives at a happier place later, asserting, โ€œAnd Iโ€™m happy by the way / That I made that jump, that leap of faith / Iโ€™m happy that it all worked out for meโ€ฆโ€

A few more notes. As to be expected, the production is a big selling point on โ€œSun Goes Down.โ€ A team comprised of ๐ŸŽ› Take A Daytrip, ๐ŸŽ› Omer Fedi, and ๐ŸŽ› Roy Lenzo do a marvelous job, with some of the best features being the warm sound, created by guitars and later, strings.  This is perfect fuel for Lil Nas X, who also has a well written, tuneful melody to work with. Nas X gives fine vocal performance, showing off his lower register.  The effect is a masculine sound that is definitely sweet music to the ears.

Final Thoughts ๐Ÿ’ญ

Will Lil Nas X remain โ€˜cancelledโ€™ for some? Probably.  For those who donโ€™t approve of his openness regarding his sexuality, as well as the things heโ€™s overcame, they still wonโ€™t tune in for โ€œSun Goes Down.โ€ That said, those who love Nas X and acknowledge the artistry that he brings to the tale will eat this single up and are definitely ready for the release of MONTERO. Iโ€™m onboard.
