Lil Durk, "The Voice" [Photo Credit: Alamo]Chicago rapper Lil Durk continues his ascent in the rap game, embracing his role as “the voice of the streets” on “The Voice.”

“P“Please don’t turn away from me / I got enough on my plate tryna turn away…/ Became the voice of the streets and my people ain’t believe in me…”  Rapper Lil Durk has had quite a successful year – I’d think he’d agree.  His been one of many rappers who have experiencing quite a come-up in 2020 specifically.  In preparation for his forthcoming project, Durk drops a brand-new single, “The Voice.”

“The Voice” is an edgy number throughout its course.  Even so, there are ‘kinder, gentler’ elements.  For example, the production, courtesy of TurnmeupJosh, LowLowTurnMeUp, and Ayo Bleu is gorgeous. Set in a minor key, some of the highlights include prominent piano, sleek drum programming, guitar, and organ.  It certainly sets up Durk for success. Referencing those ‘kinder, gentler’ aspects once more, as usual, we get a melodic rap delivery – what we’ve come to associate with Chicago rapper.

Now, on to the edginess! Lil Durk delivers a compelling flow with nice rhythm and a cadence that bodes in his favor.  Thematically, he sings about his past life, including “Sleepless nights, barely changin’ clothes…” and “Plenty nights got me traumatized.” The end of the first verse is particularly potent:

“I can’t even vote for who I believe in, shit ain’t goin’ right
I didn’t drop a tear inside the funeral, I ain't mourn right
And I nut in all the hoes I fuck, I blame the porn site.”

Raw and street – no cap. Street talk continues on the second verse:

“I know a n***a from the hood, he'll serve with no scale
Watchin’ Bands make a play, I seen him score in the mail
Gave him thirty-nine years, I heard him cry in the cell...”

Final Thoughts

All in all, Lil Durk makes his point clear that he, indeed “Became the voice of the streets.” This is a record that balances dark and light, which is a cool effect. Does “The Voice” leave me absolutely wowed? Nah, but it’s certainly worthy of spins.
