Lil Dicky, Freaky Friday © Commission MusicLil Dicky returns as ridiculously as ever on single “Freaky Friday.” The former XXL Freshman is assisted by the ubiquitous Chris Brown.

Simply calling Lil Dicky “one of a kind” might be an understatement.  The comedic rapper, who made quite the splash with his 2015 album Professional Rapper, has returned with a new single.  That new single is “Freaky Friday,” assisted by the ubiquitous urban contemporary artist, Chris Brown.  Brown kicks things off with a shout out (“Lil Dicky, ooh”), before the obligatory stamp by producer DJ Mustard (“Mustard on the beat, ho”).  Notably, Benny Blanco and Twice as Nice also ‘do work’ behind the boards.

Given the producers, and Chris Brown’s singing, the sound is sort of predictable.  The production is bright, while Brown features his share of autotune and ‘bad boy’ ad-libs.  He drops the first verse, filled with swagger (or annoyance, whichever comes first) and multiple instances of the n-word.

“Wonder if I can say the n-word (wait for real?)

Wait, can I really say the n-word?

What up, my n***a? (woo) What up, my n***a?”

Brown follows up with the chorus, which sums up the “Freaky Friday” sentiment.

“I woke up in Chris Brown’s body

Somehow this shit turned into Freaky Friday

But we got no choice but to turn this b*tch sideways…”

Lil Dicky arrives in all his ridiculousness for the second verse.  His flow is tight, as always, while his rhymes are absolutely absurd.

“What the f*ck?

I woke up and I’m Lil Dicky

Ugh, what the f*ck?

This shit is real weak

How his dick staying perched up on his balls like that?

Walking down the street and ain’t nobody know my name…

Wait, if I’m in Dicky’s body, Breezy is who?”

As aforementioned, it’s ridiculous, and the sentiment continues on his third verse, which find him assisted by Brown.  Once more, Dicky makes reference to his “junk” and is generally shallow. The outro is more interesting, where “Freaky Friday” gets real freaky, involving Ed Sheeran, DJ Khaled, and most hilariously (or disturbingly), Kendall Jenner.

Final Thoughts

Um, what can you say? Lil Dicky has some skill as both a rapper and a comedian.  That said, it’s hard not to be skeptical. The same can be said of “Freaky Friday.” There’s hilarity, yet there’s also utter corniness that’s a bit too corny to take seriously.  Ultimately, it’s best to take Lil Dicky with a grain of salt. Advice to listeners – watch the music video first, as it makes the song more likable.
