On his respectable single, “Touchdown,” Grammy-nominated rapper Lil Baby brings a compelling cadence and flow without moving the needle per se.
Football is the sugar honey iced tea. Few things are more satisfying than seeing a touchdown scored – when it’s the team you’re cheering for! Lil Baby is all about scoring touchdowns on his brief rap banger, “Touchdown”. His confidence is ‘through the roof’ as he asserts in the chorus, “Got the streets in a lock, I done conquered that shit / Got the ball in my hand, I can’t fumble this shit / He get hit stick, I get touchdown.” Word. Lil Baby is accompanied by the dark, malicious, ‘turnt up’ production of Wheezy, Dez Wright, and 9Jay. The backdrop is minimalist, characterized by its synths and hard-hitting trap drum programming. Notably, the instrumental has a couple of lighter moments, which provides some contrast.
As always, Lil Baby brings a compelling cadence and flow. This is part of the charm of the Grammy-nominated rapper. Does he say anything game-changing or groundbreaking? No, not particularly, but, he keeps it street – 100 to the nth degree! “Real gangster, I ain’t rockin’ no nail polish (No) / Where I’m from, when they rob, you don’t tell on ‘em.” Word! Again, he’s confident and unapologetic. Also, he’s thankful for his come-up (“Told my mama, ‘Ain’t no more gettin’ put out” and “From a Buick Regal to a Bugatti / Made it out and got rich, but I still grind”). Ultimately, “Touchdown” is respectable but doesn’t move the needle.
