Lil Baby, "Sum 2 Prove" [Photo Credits: Motown / Quality Control]Lil Baby is true to self, delivering an enjoyable single with “Sum 2 Prove” that doesn’t expand his craft or ascend to the next level.

On his first single of 2020, “Sum 2 Prove,” Lil Baby has an agile flow that bodes well in his favor.  From the jump, he doesn’t show any let up, rapping like his life depends on it.  That isn’t to say the lyrics are characterized by a great deal of depth but give him credit for being invested in what he spits. With some notable one-liners (“I’ma shoot by myself like a technical foul”), the crowning achievement in regard to form and memorability when it comes the lyrics, is none other than the chorus.

“Yeah, my diamonds be VV’s
They don’t wan’ see us on TV unless it’s the news
I got somethin’ to prove
Yeah, I’m young, but got somethin’ to lose
In the street, I done paid all my dues
No extortion, ain’t talkin’ bout literally
I be walkin’ on beats, Is you hearin’ me?
I just pray that my kids be a bigger me, they can’t get rid of me.”

Also boding well in Lil Baby’s favor is the production. He’s backed by a trap beat, with knocking drums that hearken back to his hit single, “Yes Indeed” with Drake.  The backdrop is nothing brand-new mind you, but it certainly supports and helps ignite the rapper’s fire.

Final Thoughts

Is “Sum 2 Prove” enjoyable? By all means.  Is this a game changing rap record? By no means.  Essentially, Lil Baby is true to self, but he doesn’t necessarily change his career trajectory or swing the pendulum any.  “Sum 2 Prove” proves that he can make hits, but it fails to find him necessarily expanding his craft and going deeper.  Does he prove himself? You be the judge.
