Rising country singer/songwriter Levi Hummon shows potential and promise beyond Nashville on his easygoing, fun single, “Songs We Sang.”
To the more casual country music fan (or non-fan), arguably, country music is in an odd place. Yes, new artists (newbies as I like to call ‘em) continue to roll out ‘new’ music. Furthermore, songs about beer, girls, and sexy trucks and other vehicles continue in excess. But, like rock and R&B, things have cooled down tremendously for country. That doesn’t stop 26-year old rising country male Levi Hummon from compelling with his new single, “Songs We Sang.”
Country is a genre of blurred lines as of late, which divides its fan base. Some prefer more traditional country, particular that which has outlaw spirit like Chris Stapleton. Others, often less countrified fans, don’t mind the eclecticism incorporating pop predominately, as well as other styles. Levi Hummon doesn’t stray from country music on “Songs We Sang,” particularly from a lyrical perspective, but it could be mistaken for a pop song. Actually, this blurred line bodes well in his favor, particularly given the current country climate.
Vocally, Hummon has a strong voice. He has some country twang and southern charm, but there’s also a clarity that is adept for the non-country world as well. He doesn’t over-sing on “Songs We Sang,” offering a balanced, clean, and respectable performance. Maybe he doesn’t necessarily distinguish himself as ‘the next big thing’ just yet, but the potential and promise is in full-force. Also working out well for the good-looking, tatted twentysomething is a catchy, easygoing chorus.
“And they were like oh oh na na na na na oh
Yeah they were like oh oh na na na na na oh.”
Okay, okay, it’s not much, but it’s fun and certainly infectious!
Final Thoughts
Levi Hummon has lots of things working out well for him. He looks the part of country male star, and, he has crossover appeal beyond Nashville. “Songs We Sang” doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but there’s lots to like. Solid voice and production.
