Ledisi, Let Love Rule © VerveLedisi continues to flex with “Us 4ever,” the fourth single from her sixth major label album, Let Love Rule. She’s assisted by BJ the Chicago Kid.

In 2017, adult contemporary R&B artist Ledisi decided she would Let Love RuleShe began by being on a “High” months before dropping the new album. “High” was marvelous, balancing modern and classic R&B sensibilities.  Then, she added to the excellence with “Add to Me.” On “Add to Me” she showcased her ability to give a truly biting vocal performance. She releases one final teaser track with “Us 4ever,” enlisting BJ the Chicago Kid.

“Us 4ever” is chocked full of old-school sensibilities. The adult contemporary R&B script is exemplified, with boxes checked off sufficiently and superbly. The production is immaculate, particularly the robust bass line and overall lushness.

As always, Ledisi delivers an excellent vocal performance.  She exhibits great control, and pushes when it feels natural and right.  The vocal production on the chorus is strong. The vocals really pop at this particular instance. The chorus is catchy.  Ledisi is allowed to flex her muscles, thanks to backing vocals fueling the fire. Among her best vocal moments is when she enters her lower register on the bridge, following the second chorus.

BJ the Chicago Kid doesn’t enter until around the 2:30 mark on the third verse. Like Ledisi, as always, BJ sounds superb. He has a lovely tone, soulful runs, and complements Ledisi awesomely. Magnificent ad-libs by Ledisi at the end, give “Us 4ever” another selling point. The scatting stands out in particular.

Final Thoughts

Four singles into Let Love Rule, it’s clear that Ledisi is as consistent as ever. Vocally, she remains a force.  Musically, the songwriting is rock-solid, while the production only accentuates voice and lyrics more.  “Us 4ever” is another winner.
