Rising California musician Lauv continues to build his case as the next pop-R&B sensation on his latest, love-centric single, “Chasing Fire.”

Ah, lauvsongs are so sweet! Lauv continues to build his case as the next pop-R&B sensation. The 23-year old, Cali musician and NYU grad (Ari Staprans Leff) is one talented dude. His latest single, “Chasing Fire,” continues to explore a familiar theme in the artist’s work as of yet – love. That’s the expectation when it comes to Lauv, right?

“I wanna hate you ‘cause I still love you

And it’s weighing on my chest

We keep our bodies tied together

To ignore what’s coming next…”

Initially, Lauv sings in his lower register on “Chasing Fire.” He approaches the vocals on the first verse in an undertone, before ascending into his middle register on the first pre-chorus.  The interpretation of the first verse shallow to some extent, but not far-fetched.  As evidenced by the aforementioned lyrics, despite an imminent break-up, sex keeping them together.  After showcasing vocal restraint early on, he’s fully invested – assertive to the nth degree. The chorus is catchy by all means.

“I’m chasing fire when I’m running after you, you

You got that something that I never wanna lose, lose

It’s like dancing when the song’s already over

Moving without getting any closer, oh

I’m chasing fire when I’m running after you.”

The second verse finds Lauv singing in his upper register, clearly where his ‘bread is buttered.’ His falsetto is incredibly appealing on the second pre-chorus and chorus sections.  Perhaps his falsetto is not the most commanding on planet earth, but he sounds sweet and successfully executes it.  With so much focus on the vocals and the lyrics, the production should be noted as well. “Chasing Fire” makes excellent use of the rhythm guitar. Also, the use of rhythmic, contemporary drum programming is a welcome touch.

Final Thoughts 

To reiterate the aforementioned, Lauv continues to build his case as the next pop-R&B sensation. “Chasing Fire” is the latest, enjoyable, and well-executed offering from this gifted young man.
