Lauv, "2021" [📷 : Lauv / AWAL]Pop singer/songwriter Lauv ushers ‘matters of the heart’ into the new year with his brand-new single, “2021.”

Love and 🎙 Lauv (Ari Leff) are like “two peas in a pod.” What I’m saying is, when Leff drops a new song, you can almost guarantee it will encompass love. Lock it in! That’s the case with his new year’s joint, “2021,” which arrived at the tail-end of 2020 – December 31 to be precise.  Leff produces this vibe-filled, contemporary hip-hop oriented pop cut alongside 🎛️ Digi. So, are the ‘Lauv songs’ so sweet again? Well…

At 3:16, “2021” is of optimal length – not too short and not too long.  Sound-wise, a definite vibe is achieved, further aided by a slower tempo.  Contrasting the slower pace, however, are the rhythmic melodic lines by Lauv on the chorus.  Like the production, this is very much idiomatic of melodic hip-hop/modern R&B.

“2021
We can have some fun, maybe we could run
I could be the one, baby, you’re the one
I think it’s time to go hard for your loving
Baby, I love you, I don’t want no one else but you.”

Initially, if I’m being honest, it’s a bit of an off-putting sound for the pop musician.  After the chorus, “2021” settles in more. Still, at times, it sounds as if Leff’s diction is questionable – sketchy at best.  Sure, the syrupy effect is commonplace in the late 10s and into the 20s, but still, a little more accuracy wouldn’t have hurt.  Some pronunciation finesse may be sacrificed, but those matters of the heart are firmly in play. The source of Leff’s love? Likely his girlfriend. Just for the record, no, he’s NOT dating 🎙 Troye Sivan, even if they’d make a cute couple.

Final Thoughts 💭

So, how does “2021” stack up? Ultimately, it’s an okay Lauv song, but not his best.  The vibe is a big selling point, but “2021” is nothing to write home about in my honest opinion.
