Lauren Jaurengui, Expectations [Photo Credit: Columbia]Lauren Jauregui proves she has the chops to be a compelling, truly viable pop artist on her soulful, solo debut single, “Expectations.”

Fifth Harmony had a respectable three-album run, but things change. For one, Camila Cabello exited prior to the girl group’s self-titled third LP.  Now, the pop collective is on hiatus, with the remaining members exploring their own solo endeavors. Lauren Jauregui previously collaborated on the Halsey hit, “Strangers”, showcasing her vocal chops.  She actually exhibits them more on her official debut solo single, “Expectations.”

There’s lots to like about “Expectations” – don’t temper those expectations! Set in compound duple meter, “Expectations” naturally has a lilting, old-school feel.  The use of guitar and bass as the core instruments only amplifies that vintage quality. As great as the production is, one rub is that the record could’ve been ‘filled out’ a bit more.  Still, there’s much more to love than to criticize. Complementing the overall soulfulness are smoky, sultry vocals by Lauren Jauregui.  She delivers a nuanced performance, showing off her distinct pipes. Backing vocals appear on the second verse, adding more oomph and body to the sound.

The chorus is catchy, memorable, and well-written.  Naturally, Jauregui sells it superbly:

“Wish I had no expectations
I wish that I could get it through your head
With no confrontation
I really wish we could talk about it instead
All these tears that I cry while I’m turned to the side
And you’re in the same f**king bed
Wish I had no expectations
But I expect, you expect, we expect.”

A great guitar solo follows the second iteration of the chorus, giving “Expectations” more personality. Furthermore, it serves as confirmation of ‘classic sensibility.’ Also, worth noting is the grit that Jauregui showcases on the final iteration of the chorus.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Lauren Jauregui impresses on her debut single, “Expectations.” If “Expectations” is indeed the benchmark, then the expectations for Jauregui’s solo career will be sky high.  Great vocals, pleasant sound, and respectable songwriting makes this a gem.
