Latto & Playboi Carti, Blick Sum | Song Review

Grammy-nominated rapper Latto taps fellow rapper Playboi Carti for a respectable remix of her 2024 single, “Blick Sum.”

“I don’t trust no man without no blicky / ‘Cause when shit get sticky, where the fuck that blicky at?” In case you need the intro from “Blick Sum” translated, Latto is NOT referencing the art supply company, BLICK®.  A blick/blicky is slang for a gun.  So, what the Grammy-nominated rapper is informing us is, she doesn’t trust a man with no gun – you better have piece! The intro alone signals that “Blick Sum” is a hard-nosed rap banger.  Latto taps rapper Playboi Carti for the assist.  Kid Hazel, Ricci Riera, Evil Nani, and W$Kharri produced “Blick Sum.”

Of course, when it comes to “Blick Sum,” not only does Latto want him to “Throw up your set for me,” she also asserts, “That pistol get that pussy wet, now come have sex we me.”  You can’t have gun talk without mentioning a different type of gun, right? “Hit somethin’ (Boop), if you love me  (If you love me).” Latto raps over a malicious-sounding, minor-key instrumental. Non troppo, “Blick Sum” features a skeletal backdrop (drum programming and synth). Of course, Latto makes up for the lack of instrumentation with her unapologetic rhymes and compelling cadence and flow.  Playboi Carti keeps in G like Latto in the second verse: “I got a smiley face on my tab, poppin’ on Tes’ / I told Latto, ‘Put ‘em in the hole, put ‘em in the casket.’” Word.  “Blick Sum” isn’t game-changing in its remixed form, but, it’s enjoyable enough.
