La’Porsha Renae exceptionally conveys the strength and importance of women on debut single, “Good Woman.”

La’Porsha Renae arrives with her debut single, “Good Woman,” following her runner-up finish on American Idol’s final season. “Good Woman” arrives after winner Trent Harmon dropped his single “There’s A Girl” to minimal buzz.  Does “Good Woman” have what it takes to make the supremely talented Renae a star? Vocally, yes, commercially, probably not.

“Good Woman” opens with dramatic strings, possessing an old-school R&B vibe. Renae delivers biting vocals, clearly flexing in her lane.  The best way to describe the vocal performance is gritty, soulful, and filled with conviction. Clearly, her passion is undeniable.  Aside from her lead vocals, she receives a superb lift from backing vocals.

The production work is sound throughout. The only rub is the lack of more differentiation.  Had more differentiation been incorporated, “Good Woman” would come over as more rousing and more exciting.  Despite being well-rounded, “Good Woman” isn’t particularly cutting edge. Regardless, it’s perfectly suited for Renae, encompassing empowerment, feminism, and promoting the strength of the independent woman.

Final Thoughts 

Thematically, “Good Woman” doesn’t bring anything new to the table.  The idea of the hard-working, independent woman has been around for years.  Regardless, La’Porsha Renae does an exceptional job singing and conveying the theme.  She plays to the strengths that she showcased on American Idol.  While “Good Woman” may not make her a star, it showcases her talent.  Fans will eat this up while  R&B enthusiasts should embrace it as well.  This is quality, traditional R&B music.
