Lana Del Rey, Lust for Life © InterscopeAlternative pop standout Lana Del Rey returns with a new, atmospheric, romantic single, “Love.” Interestingly, it manages to incorporate some groove.

The first thing that is always apparent about a Lana Del Rey song is the voice.  As always, the alternative pop musician flaunts her gorgeous, robust tone.  Regardless how one evaluates her material, her pipes are her strongest asset.  On her new single “Love,” that sentiment is no different.  Liken Del Rey to a basketball player – the gal can flat out ball…sing…

In regards to “Love,” the song is in a similar vein to much of her previous material.  It’s dramatic, filled with a palette of big sounds.  The drums are heavy, with something of an enigmatic backdrop.  Perhaps the best way to describe the sound of the single is atmospheric. Still, compared to some of her songs, there’s more optimism – less of the melodrama she’s oft-criticized for.  Is this Del Rey at her most exciting? Eh – her 2014 no. 1 album Ultraviolence had more thrilling moments, but give her some credit where credit is due.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Love” is another sound performance and song from Lana Del Rey.  Is “Love” the second coming? No – this song likely won’t win over a host of new fans for the alternative pop singer.  This should please and stimulate the base, but nothing about song screams ‘breakout.’ To her credit, the record does have a smidge more groove compared to Honeymoon, and it’s set in a major key.
