Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Lana Del Rey drops her first single of 2025, the country-infused “Henry, come on.”
“And it’s not because of you / That I turned out so dangerous / Yesterday, I heard God say, ‘It’s in your blood.’” Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Lana Del Rey has returned. While she remains ‘true to herself’ – she’s still alternative-pop-ish – she also enters into her country music era. “Henry, come on” sounds simultaneously familiar and ‘different’ for Del Rey. One key difference is her co-writer, Grammy winner Luke Laird. Laird is known for country music instead of alternative pop. Laird and Drew Erickson produced it.
Positively, “Henry, come on” is another gorgeous song from Lana Del Rey. The music backdrop begins spare, led by guitar accompaniment, but grows more lush as the song expands. The sound palette includes piano, organ, bass, drums, and strings. The vibe is alt-pop, country, and folk. As always, Del Rey shines vocally, delivering her signature indulgent, moody performance. Her tone is sublime. Even as ‘moody’ as she might sound at times, Lana blesses our ears with her upper register which is always a treat. Another pro regarding “Henry, come on” is the songwriting. As always, Del Rey has a story to tell, and, she adds some country sensibilities (“It’s last call, ‘Hey, y’all’ / Hang his hat up on the wall / Tell him that his cowgirl is gone”). All in all, “Henry, come on” is tried and true Lana Del Rey with some tweaks. If you are familiar with her catalog, this song fits right in. The rub? The song, while beautiful, is not the most exciting. Pleasant and respectable, I’m not certain this five-minute-plus record moves the needle.
