One of the films garnering plenty of buzz in 2018 is A Star is Born, starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.  Given the music-centric nature and storyline of the film, it’s not surprising that the film comes with a highly-anticipated soundtrack. The promo single from the compilation, led by its two stars, is “Shallow,” an original co-written by Lady Gaga and Mark Ronson among others.

“Shallow” features acoustic guitar accompaniment initially, giving off a folk-pop, country vibe.

Bradley Cooper, who sings the first verse, showcases a beautiful singing voice.  He’s definitely multi-talented for sure.

“Tell me somethin’ girl

Are you happy in this modern world?

Or do you need more?

Is there somethin’ else you’re searching for?”

Lady Gaga arrives on the second verse, with more instrumentation backing her, including piano, bass. Eventually, she showcases her incredibly powerful pipes. She especially cranks things up near the end.

“Tell me something boy

Aren’t you tired tryin’ to fill that void?

Or do you need more?

Ain’t it hard keepin’ it so hardcore?”

Both Cooper/Gaga eventually sing together, showcasing great vocal chemistry. Sure, she out-sings him, but that’s to be expected, right?

Final Thoughts

“Shallow” is a respectable record, all in all.  That said, the pacing is slightly off, and it is a bit ‘all over the place.’  Regardless, there’s something there.
