elcome to 5ive Songs, where we keep things short and sweet – no extra calories or needless fluff! There’s a theme/topic, five songs, and a short blurb.  Yes, it’s a playlist, but it’s a miniature playlist that shouldn’t take much time to consume.  On the 39th edition of 5ive Songs (2022), we select five songs where the ladies sing BITCH.  Okay, let’s get into it!

1. Lizzo, “I Love You Bitch”

💿 Special 🏷 Nice Life / Atlantic • 📅 2022

Lizzo, Special [📷: Nice Life / Atlantic]“I love you, bitch (I love you) / I love you, bitch (Yeah, I love you).” It’s never shocking to hear 🏆 Grammy-winning pop singer 🎙 Lizzo swear, particularly when that swear word is bitch.  No one should be surprised 💿 Special has a record featuring the five-letter word in its title. No, 🎵 “I Love You Bitch” isn’t a classy, refined pop cut, but, Lizzo makes her point loud and clear.

love ya pal“I realized that I wanted to write a universal love song – one you could sing to the person you’re fucking and your best friend, to your family, or to someone you just met at a bar.” Hey, at least Lizzo is transparent when describing “I Love You Bitch,” right? I mean, the lyrics support her assertion: “Uh, yeah, you are the most special-est / Not just that bitch, but you my bitch.” Woo! “I Love You Bitch” musters up a catchy chorus (featured at the beginning of this blurb) and great production work courtesy of 🎛 Omer Fedi and 🎛 Blake Slatkin.  Yeah, it’s 🎵 “Pretty Bitchin’”, 🎙 Miranda Lambert!

2. Bella Poarch, “Build a Bitch”

🎵 “Build a Bitch” • 🏷 Warner • 📅 2021

Bella Poarch, "Build a Bitch" [📷: Warner]The eyebrow-raising 🎵“Build a Bitch” finds Filipino-American pop singer🎙 Bella Poarch singing about women’s empowerment and criticizing guys looking for physical perfection. There’s lots to heart about this record with the messaging being the biggest triumph.  The chorus, which appears at the onset, sets the tone. “This ain’t Build a Bitch (a bitch) / You don’t get to pick and choose,” Bella sings, continuing to name the details so many men scrutinize when it comes to women.  She adds at the end of the chorus, “I’m filled with flaws and attitude / So if you need perfect, I’m not built for you.”

Poarch makes it clear far too many men set an impossible standard for their own benefit.  In the verses, she goes on to elaborate on the opposite sex’s search for perfection, further illustrating her point.  Beyond the songwriting and a strong performance from Poarch, “Build a Bitch” features slick production work (🎛 Elie Rizk and 🎛 Sub Urban) that’s ear-catching.  Ultimately, Bella delivers on this brief, colorful pop song; among the best of 2021.

3. Doja Cat, “Bottom Bitch”

💿 Hot Pink • 🏷 Kemosabe / RCA • 📅 2019

Doja Cat, Hot Pink [📷: Kemosabe / RCA]Doja Cat definitely raised eyebrows with the crowning achievement from 💿 Hot Pink, 🎵 “Bottom Bitch” written and produced with 🎛 Yeti Beats. Notably,  🎙 Blink-182 receives writing credits thanks to a sample of their classic, 🎵 “What’s My Age Again?”.  The lyrics are aggressive. Interestingly, the 🏆 Grammy winner references pimping at the beginning as she sings the chorus.  This, of course, is where bottom bitch comes into play.

besties“Ooh, that’s my trick

I’m her pimp

She my flip

Ooh, don’t forget

That’s my trick

She’s my bottom bitch…”

In the verses, Doja maintains toughness.  “She just like a pro / She just wanna blow up / If you’re talkin’ shit / Wipe your spit off my nuts,” she sings. While there is more than its fair share of sexual innuendo and references, this outlandish cut feels more like a truly committed friendship than say a relationship.  The second verse continues to find her elevating her ‘bottom bitch’ on a pedestal.  WOO!!!

4. girl in red, “You Stupid Bitch”

💿 if I could make it go quiet • 🏷 world in red / AWAL • 🗓 2021

girl in red, if i could make it go quiet [📷: world in red / AWAL]Three words: 🎵 “You Stupid Bitch”. Holy moly! “You Stupid Bitch” is actually the title of the single from alternative singer/songwriter, 🎙 girl in red (Marie Ulven Ringheim).  The ‘charmingly’ titled song appears as the sixth track on her 2021 debut album, 💿 if I could make it go quiet.  As brash and unapologetic as the title is, the song itself isn’t quite as rough around the edges.

hey idiotSo, why is Ringheim calling someone a “stupid bitch?” Well, matters of the heart are involved.  Within the context of the song, she’s referencing a girlfriend, who seems to have the opposite perspective regarding relationship(s).  As girl in red tells it, she’s simply trying to be supportive and is the perfect girl for her.  “You let the wrong people love you,” she advises in the first verse, adding, “But you don’t see that do you?” Later, in the second verse, she adds, “But you never listen / Take my advice as criticism / Then make the worse decisions.” In the chorus, she calls her “stupid bitch,” but not maliciously believe it or not: “You stupid bitch, can’t you see / The perfect one for you is me.”  Furthermore, throw an energetic, driving alt-rock backdrop (Ringheim and 🎛 Matias Tellez) and assertive vocals and you have a surefire winner.

5. Britney Spears, “Work Bitch”

💿 Britney Jean 🏷 RCA • 📅 2013

Britney Spears, Britney Jean [📷: RCA]🏆 Grammy-winning pop superstar 🎙 Britney Spears informed the world in 2013, “you better work… BITCH!”  Honestly, 🎵 “Work Bitch” was the best thing that went down on her 2013 album, 💿 Britney Jean. Honestly, even if you don’t approve of her use of the word ‘bitch’ for emphasis, Britney definitely had a legit point with this song.

you got it bossExhibit A:

“You want a hot body?

You want a Bugatti?

You want a Maserati?

You better work bitch.”

Facts, facts, facts! If I don’t work out and eat healthy (ugh), I can’t have that hot body, dammit! If I don’t somehow find a job that pays mad bread, well, there’ll be no Bugatti or Maserati for me!  I mean, Britney Spears gives us a life lesson here! She’s oh so wise on “Work Bitch.”
