Labrinth, Sia, Diplo (LSD), Genius © Records / ColumbiaLabrinth, Sia, and Diplo join forces as supergroup LSD.  The entertaining, theatrical “Genius” serves as their debut single.

Superstar collaborations sometimes work, and sometimes they don’t.  One would think that a lot of great talent working together would create a formidable end result.  That’s not always the case.  Remember Superheavy? Anyways, Labrinth, Sia, and Diplo are joining forces as LSD – totally not the psychedelic drug. The trio gives us their first taste of music with “Genius.” Calling it genius would be an overstatement, but there’s definitely potential.

Initially, “Genius” is a bit off-putting.  Sia introduces the first ‘lead’ on the track, Labrinth.  He then begins quasi-singing the rhythmic melody, over rhythmic strings. It takes a bit to settle into hearing where he’s going with his verse, but it is clear he’s being theatrical.

“Do you think I’m stupid?

Do you think I’m batshit crazy, having you on my mind?”

More clarity arrives on the pre-chorus, where he’s joined by Sia.  On the following chorus, both profess each other to be geniuses, adding far more syllables to the titular lyric than necessary.  Diplo introduces Sia, who takes over second verse duties, asserting what Labrinth does for her.  Again, they join forces for pre-chorus and bridge, once more professing love and asserting genius.  They follow up with a bridge and dramatic outro.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Genius” is enjoyable and fun.  It’s not game changing or genius, but certainly worthwhile.
