Norwegian DJ/producer Kygo taps Grammy-winning urban contemporary artist Miguel for heartbreak, dance-pop single, “Remind Me to Forget.”
Kygo continues to put his staple on dance and pop music. The Norwegian DJ taps a less likely collaborator, Miguel, for his latest single, “Remind Me to Forget.” The results are superb. “Remind Me to Forget” appears on Kids in Love, which was originally released in Fall 2017. Following an introductory wobbling synth, Miguel begins what ends up being a truly compelling and radiant vocal performance. The first verse stands out in particular, given the lightness of the backdrop, not to mention the poetic lyrics.
“It never fades away, it’s staying
Your kiss like broken glass on my skin
And all the greatest loves end in violence
It’s tearing up my voice, left in silence.”
The intensity picks up on the pre-chorus, with additional instrumentation as well as more assertive vocals by Miguel. By the chorus, Kygo treats Miguel’s vocals gimmickier. The production gains more of a dance-pop identity, despite the heartbreak.
“You left your mark (my heart)
You left your mark, reminding me to forget
You left your mark (my heart)
You left your mark (understand)…”
The second verse still showcases some restraint, but it’s more developed compared to the first. Later, a bridge contrasts everything that precedes it. This helps to keep things interesting to say the least.
“Remember I told you
To save it, it’s over
And I’ll be alright
So hurt me as much as you like
I need you to let go
I got these mementos
And I’ll be alright.”
Final Thoughts
Kygo and Miguel make a formidable pair on “Remind Me to Forget.” The production is excellent, the vocals are magnificent, and overall, this is a well-conceived record. As aforementioned, this isn’t a combination of artists that comes to mind as collaborators, but that’s the beauty of music in itself.
