Norwegian DJ and producer Kygo and pop singer/songwriter Ava Max ‘bring the heat’ on their surefire, collaborative bop, “Whatever.”
Good things happen when Kygo and Ava Max collaborate. What is the good that came out of this music union? “Whatever” a three-minute bop that provides instance enhancement to any playlist! If “Whatever” sounds familiar, or has a nostalgia about it, that’s because samples the 2001 Shakira record, “Whenever, Wherever”. Of course, it’s not all about ‘Shakira, Shakira.’ “Whatever” is a fabulous ‘original’ more often than not, that benefits from a colorful backdrop and marvelous vocals.
Beginning with the production, Kygo ‘puts in work.’ Honestly, he always does – ‘what a man, what a man, what a talented man!’ The supporting instrumental can be characterized as classy and rhythmic. Notably, it becomes more ‘electronic’ beginning with the post-chorus. What I’m saying is, Ava has plenty of inspiration! Of course, Max is a superb vocalist, who slaughters from start to finish. As “Whatever” progresses, Ava digs in more vocally, showing off the sheer power of her instrument. The best moment, unsurprisingly, is the chorus, which is catchy – quite tuneful:
“Whatever, whatever
We were never good together
I’ll be here, and you stay there
Truth is, I never cared
Whatever, whatever
Two years, that ain’t forever
I’ll be here, and you stay there
Won’t see me cry no tears.”
See where that Shakira classic comes into play? One other note regarding this gem is the fact that the form is traditional. “Whatever” is well organized and accessible. All in all, Kygo and Ava Max ‘kill it’ on this joint.
