The records that grace this column are older, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re ancient – no fossils 🦴! All genres of music are welcome. In the 200th edition of Throwback Vibez 🕶️🎶 (2024), we recollect and reflect on “Jungle Boogie” performed by Kool & The Gang.
“Get down, get down!” Indeed, Kool & The Gang. Among the R&B/soul/funk collective’s best and most memorable songs is “Jungle Boogie”. The platinum-certified song is the third track from their 1973 album Wild And Peaceful. A resounding success on the pop charts, “Jungle Boogie” peaked at no. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. This iconic hit was written and produced by the band. Interestingly, Kool & The Gang are Grammy winners, given their contribution to the soundtrack for Saturday Night Fever (“Open Sesame”). However, gems like “Jungle Boogie” weren’t even recognized with a Grammy nomination – sad.
“Jungle boogie (Get down with the boogie) / Jungle boogie (Get it on)…” The musical accompaniment is dynamic and, fittingly, funky. The horns pack a mean punch alongside the rhythm section, which is ‘in the pocket.’ The riffs ‘riff hard’ on this infectious classic. The clavinet was a marvelous instrumental choice, amplifying the funk to the nth degree. There are few lyrics, but the vibe is electric, thanks to how potent the lyrics are, and the personality exhibited by those sickening gang vocals. Fun and boogieing is the modus operandi, and Kool & The Gang excels. “Jungle Boogie” requires no extensive analysis. This old-school bop is all about the vibe. It’s also about tremendous musicianship – musicians ‘putting in work’ on their instruments.
