On 5ive Songs, we (I) keep things short and sweet – no extra calories or needless fluff.  There’s a topic, five songs, and a short blurb.  Yes, it’s a playlist, but it’s a miniature playlist that shouldn’t take much time to consume.  On this edition of 5ive Songs, we select five songs that are associated with the KITCHEN in some form or fashion.

1. Ariana Grande, “Off the table”

Ft. The Weeknd

💿 Positions • 🏷 Republic • 📅 2020

Ariana Grande, Positions [📷: Republic]Ariana Grande keeps things hot on 💿 Positions, her surprise 2020 album with 🎵 “Off the table,” her second duet with 🎙 The Weeknd (🎵 “Love Me Harder”, 💿 My Everything, 2014).  Since their first collaboration, it’s clear that both artists have matured.  This contemporary R&B slow jam was readymade for The Weeknd – the man excels when there’s a lethargic tempo in play.  That said, Grande shines bright like a diamond, giving us a blend of her cool energy as well as some grittier, more aggressive vocals as the record progresses.  In addition to gorgeous vocals (including the ad libs and layering), the listener is blessed with gorgeous, ear catching production.  Something tells me, this has little to do with the kitchen or dining room table…

2. Luke Combs, “Refrigerator Door”

💿 What You See Ain’t Always What You Get • 🏷 Sony Music Entertainment • 📅 2020

Luke Combs, What You See Ain't Always What You Get [📷: Sony]One of country music’s hottest commodities, 🎙 Luke Combs, adds 🎵 “Refrigerator Door” to this kitchen-associated list of songs. “Refrigerator Door” appears as the second track on 💿 What You See Ain’t Always What You Get. “Refrigerator Door” was written by Combs along with 🎼 Jordan Brooker, while 🎛️ Scott Moffatt handles the production. “Refrigerator Door” is a prime example of ‘singer/songwriter’ country song, reminiscing on the memories posted on the refrigerator door – ah, those magnets come in handy. “My first day of kindergarten when I was five years old,” Luke sings on the second verse, listing the contents posted on the Kenmore, continuing “A postcard that my cousin sent from Cancun, Mexico…” The chorus, sung marvelously by Combs, best sums up the significance of that door: “…Couple magnets, recipes, and Polaroids / Yeah, but that’s my life on the ‘frigerator door.”

3. Fiona Apple, “Under the Table”

💿 Fetch the Bolt Cutters • 🏷 Epic • 📅 2020

Fiona Apple, Fetch the Bolt Cutters [📷: Epic]“Kick me under the table all you want / I won’t shut up; I won’t shut up.” Sure, 🎵 “Shameika” has the best chorus of 💿 Fetch the Bolt Cutters on 🔒, but 🎵 “Under the Table” gives it a run for its money.  🏆 Grammy-winning singer songwriter 🎙 Fiona Apple makes it clear that she won’t be muzzled – she’ll always speak her mind, no matter the occasion.  The song was inspired by a dinner where, wouldn’t you know, Fiona was true to self.  One of many winners from the 🎧 best album of 2020.

4. Rich the Kid, “New Freezer”

Ft. Kendrick Lamar

💿 The World is Yours • 🏷 Interscope • 🗓 2018

Rich the Kid, The World is Yours © InterscopeIn 2018, rapper 🎙 Rich the Kid released his debut studio album, 💿 The World is Yours.  Among the highlights is 🎵 “New Freezer,” featuring 🎙 Kendrick Lamar. A quirky banger of sorts, Rich the Kid raps about ‘ice’ and foreigns – cars and girls that is!  “My bitch too foreign, need a visa / I don’t need her,” he brags, later asserting, “New bitch wanna fuck to my AP / New freezer.” Little to do with the freezer we use to actually freeze food, but whatever.  “New Freezer” definitely isn’t a track you’d normally associate Kendrick Lamar, but he brings his own unique approach, fitting the trap vibes (“I want some top from like two sets of twins / Twinnie twin twins, yeah, yeah”).

5. R. Kelly, “In the Kitchen”

💿 TP.3 Reloaded • 🏷 Zomba • 🗓 2005

R. Kelly, TP.3 Reloaded [📷: Zomba]“Girl, I’m ready to toss your salad.” Yikes.  Yeah, that’s not the best look from a 🏆 Grammy-winning artist who’s been imprisoned due to his sexual misconduct.  🎙 R. Kelly is undoubtedly gifted but has allowed pleasure to get him into sticky situations – understatement.  Nonetheless, 🎵 “In the Kitchen” (💿 TP.3 Reloaded, 2005) is definitely associated with the kitchen… sort of. “Cutting up tomatoes / Fruits and vegetables and potatoes / Girl, you look so sexy while you’re doing the damn thing.” Kelly mentions vegetables, clearly associated with the kitchen, yet the allure of the song is his freakiness – SEX, SEX, SEX! Obviously, the salad IS NOT the standard nutritious dish loaded with veggies…

The salacious chorus says it all:

“I want sex in the kitchen, over by the stove
Put you on the counter, by the buttered rolls
Hands on the table, on your tippy toes
Girl, we’ll be making love, like the restaurant was closed.”
