Theme & Lyrics

Sadly, 🎙 King Von is one of many rappers gone far too soon.  On his signature single, 🎵 “Took Her to the O” (💿 Levon James, 2020), the late Chicago rapper is at his best.  Backed by tough, minor-key production (🎛 Chopsquad DJ), King Von delivers an entertaining though violent tale.  The storytelling is part of the charm of the record, not to mention Von’s flow and the memorable chorus.

“Just got some top from a stripper bitch, she from Kankakee

Just bought a Glock with a ruler clip, boy, don’t play with me

This bitch a ho met her at the store, you know how it go

She wanna smoke, so I bought some dope and took her to the O.”

It’s not refined (understatement), mind you, but King Von is honest, keeping it real.  Let’s unpack those four, memorable lines, shall we? We learn that King Von gets oral sex from a random girl he met at the storm, who’s from Kankakee.  He makes it crystal clear that she’s a ho – he said it, not me! She wants to get high, so, he buys dope, and takes her to The O – Old Block, which has hotel rooms, a bars etc. Also, can’t leave out the fact that he bought a new gun (Glock) because that plays a role in the violent part of this colorful tale, woo!

So, after he does his thing with this “ho,” he decides to take her to get the purse she left, but runs into trouble with, I quote, “A big, goofy nigga.” This dude, “from 63rd,” is abusing the girl. Von tosses her her phone, which she left in his car and wants to bounce – let them handle shit. Unfortunately, things escalate, “Big goofy” is talking crazy, throw a brick at his car, and Von raises his “Blick (aka gun)” and shoots him.  He and the ‘ho’ exit before the police come.  Also, worth noting, the girl doesn’t give a sugar honey iced tea that her dude (apparently) has been gunned down.  Wow!

Final Thoughts 💭

fire sunglassesOutlandish and utterly wild, 🎵 “Took Her to the O” is a surefire rap banger. Perhaps the bigger takeaway is the talent that was lost when 🎙 King Von was killed.  Sure, “Took Her to the O” isn’t a classy joint (😂), but it’s da-yum entertaining.
