King Princess, Pussy is God [Photo Credits: Zelig / Columbia]Rising pop artist King Princess celebrates queer love (intact with spiritual references) on her boldly-titled, unapologetic single, “Pussy is God.”

“You know that it’s God, baby, when you’re around her / I’ve been praying for hours / You know that it’s God, baby, when you’re around her / She’s God and I’ve found her.” The LGBTQ community is well represented in pop music in 2018.  There have been numerous songs that depict gay relationships, desires, and respective issues within the community itself.  19-year old King Princess, who turns 20 in December, is the latest musician to speak on behalf of the LGBTQ community. Notably, she’s genderqueer and gay. She informs the world, “Pussy is God.”

Naturally, the distinct title of the three-and-a-half-minute number is eyebrow-raising to say the least.  A celebration of queer love, King Princess takes things a step further by incorporating spiritual references, blasphemously of course.  On the first verse, she sings, “Your pussy is God and I love it / Gonna kiss me real hard, make me want it… / But I know you feel right so I’m coming.” The memorable, risqué lyrics don’t stop there. On the second verse, she sings:

“…I’ve never been good at this nice shit

But I can try if you like it

It gets hard when you give a fuck

Get knocked down from some other love.”

Safe to say, the ‘Princess’ isn’t playing around when it comes to her desires (or language for that matter).  Besides the edgy lyrics, there are other things worth noting and praising.  The production work is lovely, particularly the slightly detuned piano used throughout.  The sound can be characterized as a soulful alternative-pop sound, anchored by a rhythmic beat. Speaking of the overall sound, there’s excellent use of a variety of sounds, samples, synths within the production, in addition to the keyboard, bass, and drum programming.  Also, with so much being made about the content, the vocals by King Princess are clear, compelling, and ultimately, lovely.

Final Thoughts

King Princess can expect minimal airplay for “Pussy is God” for an assortment of reasons.  That said, this is a fascinating record with plenty of great qualities.  The message regarding sexuality is loud and clear, but could it have even been articulated even stronger with more depth? Perhaps.  Still, the LGBTQ community should ‘beam with PRIDE’ given the increased presence of songs representing them.
