βI hate it when dudes try to chase me,β π King Princess (Mikaela Straus) sings in the first verse of her 2018 song, π΅ β1950β. Β If you donβt want dudes to chase you, then, understandably, that would suck! She adds on the highlight from her EP released the same year, πΏ Make My Bed, βBut I love it when you try to save me.β The you, of course, is a lady, just like King Princess is.Β Early on, the cards are revealed, and the talented, singer/songwriter is unafraid to be out and proud π³οΈβπ! βI love it when we play 1950,β she asserts, referencing a much more conservative, less, queer-friendly era in history.
King Princess is unafraid to be bold β live true to herself πͺ.Β βSo, tell me why Gods look like you / And tell me why itβs wrong,β she sings in the pre-chorus.Β Clearly, the artist is awe of this person, as if they were a deity. Β Also, while same sex relationships are much more widely accepted, that wasnβt always the case, and still to this day, gets labelled by some as being wrong. Itβs also worth noting that Staus proclaimed π΅ βPussy is Godβ in 2018 as well. In the chorus, she sings, with a tuneful melody, mind you, βSo, Iβll wait for you, Iβll pray / I will keep on waiting for your love.β Aww π₯°! Straus describes this as moment, though at the time, it was a moment that felt like forever.Β The amour! There are many lyrics that stand out, with one being the simple yet telling, βDid you mean it when you said I was pretty?β from the second verse.Β Throughout the course of β1950,β Straus sings beautifully.Β The songwriting, alongside πΌ β Nick Long aka Dark Waves is stellar. Β The inspiration of a 1950s novel, π The Price of Salt by βοΈ Patricia Highsmith,Β makes for a fascinating musical listen. The production by ποΈ Michael Malchicoff is a win too. π΅ β1950β is a gem π, PERIOD.
