Love Simon © RCAGrammy-nominated urban contemporary artist Khalid and urban-pop artist Normani (of Fifth Harmony) join forces on single “Love Lies,” from the Love, Simon soundtrack.

“So baby, tell me where your love lies / Waste the day and spend the night / Underneath the sunrise / Show me where your love lies.” Grammy-nominated urban contemporary artist Khalid and urban-pop artist Normani (Fifth Harmony), join forces on “Love Lies.” “Love Lies” is the first single from the Love, Simon original motion picture soundtrack.

“Love Lies” is set in a minor key.  Instantly, the record has a darker, sexier vibe. Adding to the vibe is sensational, urban contemporary production.  This includes excellent use of guitar accompaniment, as well as snaps within the production. Khalid starts things off with smooth, distinct vocals on the first verse. He’s a commanding, unique presence.  Normani is no slouch. She drops beautiful vocals on the second verse, contrasting Khalid with distinct, nuanced, and powerful vocals in her own right.

“Love Lies” features catchy pre-chorus and chorus sections. Both Khalid and Normani sing the same pre-chorus, made colorful by a dash of profanity.

“Don’t be afraid to tell me if you ain’t with it (you ain’t with it) / I see you’re focused, yeah, you’re so independent (independent) / It’s hard for me to open up, I’ll admit it (I’ll admit it) / You’ve got some shit to say and I’m here to listen.”

The chorus represents the crème de la crème of “Love Lies”:

“So baby, tell me where your love lies / Waste the day and spend the night / Underneath the sunrise / Show me where your love lies / Tell me where your love lies / Waste the day and spend the night / Underneath the sunrise / Show me where your love lies.”

Both vocalists exhibit excellent vocal blend and chemistry on the chorus and bridge sections.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Love Lies” is an enjoyable, well-rounded urban contemporary duet.  Perhaps the world remains unchanged by the creation of this duet, but it is welcome ear candy by all means.
