R&B artist Khalid collaborates with Disclosure once more for “Know Your Worth.” The results are respectable, not game changing.
Khalid is a talented singer – that should go without saying. That said, the Grammy-nominated artist had his fair share of bland, blasé moments on his sophomore album, Free Spirit. Yeah, it was the kind of album that you ‘want to like,’ but ultimately falls short of the glory. Post-Free Spirit, the former American Teen has dropped a couple of singles, including the song at hand, “Know Your Worth.” Once more, he’s working with Grammy-nominated production duo, Disclosure.
Typically, the collaboration between Khalid and Disclosure is a ‘match made in heaven.’ Is the case the same on “Know Your Worth?” Well, “Know Your Worth” is no “Talk” – let’s put it that way. Even so, Disclosure continues to impress with their bright, bubbly, and groovalicious production style which is a fitting backdrop for Khalid. So, what’s the rub? While there are some sweet vocal moments from the distinct-sounding musician, at other times, I find myself underwhelmed. Perhaps its due to being slightly too casual vocally, or maybe, the melody is merely average. Even if the verses are meh melodically, Khalid brings the heat on the chorus. Again, it’s not on the same level of infectiousness as “Talk” (few things are), but it’s a winning moment for Mr. Robinson:
“You don’t know your worth All the things I know that you deserve Say it’s not real if it doesn’t hurt Find someone you know will put you first Find someone who loves you at your worst.”
Final Thoughts
All in all, Khalid delivers a respectable cut with “Know Your Worth.” If nothing else, Robinson makes it crystal clear, “Gotta keep, gotta keep, gotta keep your head up.” That’s uplifting. That said, “Know Your Worth” doesn’t rank in the top echelon of the singer’s catalogue, at least from my perspective. It’s good enough, but at this point, I’d love to see this talented young man exhibit more innovative spirit – he has the voice to do so.
