Grammy-nominated R&B artist Khalid drops his second single of 2024, “Adore U.” Respectable, “Adore U” is fueled by the familiar: matters of the heart.
“Started on two different pages, I’m happy we made it / You say that you’re broken, I’m the one who saves you.” Ah, those matters of the heart – always a fantastic topic for a pop/R&B song. Khalid (Khalid Robinson) excels at singing about love well past his American Teen years. “Adore U” marks the second single the Grammy-nominated artist released in 2024 following “Please Don’t Fall in Love With Me”. The talented vocalist last reached the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2022 (“Numb” with Marshmello). Can “Adore U” propel him back into the upper echelon?
“Adore U” was written by Robinson alongside producers Jamil Chammas (Digi) and Justin Lucas. It is a lush-sounding, rhythmic ballad. Khalid sings well, flaunting the beauty and refined nature of his voice. He never gets too high singing with control yet not stifling the passion. Again, the theme is relatable: love. In the memorable chorus, he tells her, “High, we should just smoke / We should get high, we should just / (Fall into my arms, let me adore you) / High, we should just float / If you can fly, we should just…” Robinson never says anything shocking or unfamiliar as he expresses his love, but everything is sound. Sound describes “Adore U” perfectly. It is enjoyable and well-rounded without moving necessarily moving the needle for Khalid. Can it propel him back to his hit-making ways of the past? Maybe – only time will tell. Respectable and enjoyable enough, but not flashy.
